Should distribution block be fused?

I'm going to be running 2 gauge from the battery to the trunk area, then splitting off into two 4 gauge wires to each amp. Should the distribution block be fused if I already have an 80 amp fuse by the battery?

Technically, it depends on if the amps you are installing have their own fuses.

If they do, then nah. If they don't, then yah.

I would do it, you should always fuse a power source like that near the battery, especially something like 2ga.

I asked a similar question a while back...everyone said fused was the way to go. I'm gonna be running 4 gauge from the battery (80 amp fuse) to a block with four 8 gauge outs...also fused with 80 amps each. Of course I'll be replacing my battery with an Optima Yellowtop

exactly. The 80A fuse by your battery should be equal or less than the total amperage of the fuses on your amps. I've only used fused power distribution since my amps never have built in fuses.

I don't believe the amps are fused. Phoenix Gold Xenon. I'll have an 80 amp fuse at the battery, then a 40 amp fuse for each amp at the distribution block.

So is this overkill? And would it cause a problem? The amps are JL 500/1 and 300/2 One output will be for a car pc and the other is going to be a farad cap.

I would suggest larger than 4 gauge for those two amps.

Not really required... and a cap... not required either. You don't need 2AWG for a 17ft run and <1400W.

If you're running 17ft+ and 1500W+ then sure. As for the distro fuses, I believe the 500/1 requires a 50A, and the 300/2 40A. Don't assume 80A for everything on the block. Go with the recommended. As for your carPC, again depends on what current draw it would require. And use slightly higher. Fuses are used to protect your gear... going w/ higher than recommended may damage your electronics.

And DO NOT forget the battery fuse... always w/in 18 inches of the battery. Oh... and one stupid mistake some ppl make is putting in the fuse near the battery prior to finished install. Good luck

I'm just going by this chart for power wire recommendations.
