can anyone recommend some really good police scanners? brands and models would be appreciated. Something that does not have ugly wires haging from it.

 

Escort Passport 8500 but you will have wires. This guy offers a three year warranty off of ebay. Or go with the Bel RX65.

Do yourself a favor and get the Escort Passport 8500 x50 from a retailer like Best Buy (I got mine for $279 a few months back from BB). Buy there 2 yr replacement plan and even if nothing goes wrong with it in 2 yrs, before the replacement warranty goes out, have them replace it so at least you know you'll have the latest and greatest for a few more years.

Next, get out online and purchase the DirectWire kit for the x50 and hardwire it into the fuse box. It's simple.. Took me about 5 minutes.

That won by business and made me want to post this as well. I'll post how it turns out when I get it and install it (I'll be ordering it monday).

 

Escort Passport 8500 X50 is the bomb. I've had one for over a year. I can pick up CHP over 2 miles away.....KA band is what most departments are using. Haven't got a ticket yet. So far I 've been able to see them before they see me. I am still not sold on the Laser detection capability of any radar detector. I can live with the smartcord.
