Was looking for your thoughts. I am of the same school of thought about front stage only and rears only confuse the issue. I am also of the school of thought that more cone area is always a better to reach a given spl then cone excursion (reduced driver distortion). All that being said, what are your thoughts regarding using the rear locations in a G coupe for mid bass drivers. Of course crossing them over fairly low so they do not muddy up the sound stage and using the same driver as in the front stage so they have same if not similar tonality.

Well,if it winds up being a good idea, it will be able to be seen by all and if it's a bad one, same deal. Not to mention he's not the only one on this forum with indepth knowlwdge who may be able to answer or start a good discussion.

 

When I was younger I was more concerned with frequency response than localization. I did a lot of rear mounted midbass speakers. Back then there were lots of 4" and 4x6" front speakers that couldn't play midbass, or were in lousy midbass mounting systems. So a pair of 8" playing 200-50 and a 12 playing 50 and down worked well from a frequency response perspective.

But with newer longer throw speakers and bigger front locations, I don't think any midbass speaker locations are worth it. Get the best you can up front, and more from the back just screws you up.

I'd rather have a slight midbass dip and front stage-midbass than stronger midbass but have it coming from the rear...
