Thumbs down Do I need an external receiver to hook up satellite radio?

I've been trying to hook up with Satellite Radio for a while now but everyone I ask about installing can't tell me anything about what I need. Can Sirius or XM be hooked up directly through the Factory Bose Head Unit or do I have to have an external receiver installed?:

if your car is already wired for satallite... then there's a kit that wires straight into the OEM system... check out http://www.grubbsperformance.com/ for more info and a place to buy.

Thanks for the link Visual. I'm not sure if my car is wired for satellite or not. It is a 2003 AT Coupe. Bose stereo has satellite selector on it. I just want to avoid having an external receiver installed.

I believe in the '03 the connector is in the trunk on the driver's side under the carpeting and possibly a liner.

Some of the earliest 03's were SAT ready head units (with the buttons and head unit support), but were NOT prewired, meaning the cable was not run into the trunk. At around 03.5 they started making all G's SAT PREWIRED...so all you would do is buy the reciever (if you didn't get one from the dealer), then connect it in the trunk, then subscribe to the monthly service...

Info I found...

Here's the scoop on whether you are pre-wired or not:

"Before purchasing please check & see if you are pre-wired for this unit, for 2003 the VIN rages are as follows, (these go by the last 6 digits of your VIN):
Sedan VIN: 321894 & higher
Coupe VIN: 210827 & higher
All 2004 and later cars are pre-wired from the factory."

Like other people have said here, all you'll need is a satellite radio tuner, antenna, and wiring harness to the headunit (if your car isn't already prewired). My car came pre-wired and it was a very simple install.

Taking it one step further...

Hey everyone....
I have a 2003 Sedan, definitely NOT prewired, with no "sat" button. What would you guys have to say about me finding a used Bose headunit (junkyard, online, etc.) that has the "sat" button and then buying the Sirius kit from say, everything35?

Any ideas on how hard a head unit changeout would be (factory to factory pre-wired)?

Thanks

well, in addition to the head unit, you would also need to run the prewire cable from it to the trunk. So it would take you some time to do.
