OEM Brake Pad Compound
Hi, I have an '03 5AT G coupe. What material is the infiniti brake pads made of? Ceramic or semi-metallic? I need new pads soon and i'm looking to buy either the Duralast made of semi-metallic or Duralast Gold made of ceramic. I am currently running the oem infiniti brake pads and i want to match the compounds that are already being used. Also, which duralast performs better, the Duralast or Duralast Gold pads?

I'm using the ceramic pads made by Duralast...they don't seem to grip as good as the OEM. The OEMs are of course more gritty and you get more dust, but I'm gonna go back to OEM asap.
I have read elsewhere that the OEM AT 2003-2004 pads were supplied to Nissan by Sumitomo and Hitachi.
Given the brake dust and short life the of front pads these are likely very soft semi-metallics compounds.
The rear pads may be of an organic compound containing some ceramic.
I went with Centric's Posi Quiet Extended Wear 106 series pads. These are made of an organic/ kevlar compound. Centric also owns Stop Tech and Axxis, and they make OEM replacements under license from Sumitomo.
Centric techs in California recommend these over their 105 series Ceramic compound for street use. The advantage is that these pads don't need to heat up as do the Ceramic compounds for maximum friction. And they are are less prone to make noise.
Centric does offer a 104 series semi-metallic pad for the G35 application but it will dust and offer much shorter life according to the techs.

How a pad compound interacts with the various grades [G7-G13] of cast iron in a rotor is important to know.
Different rotors allow different thicknesses of pad transfer film to build up.
The point is specifying a pad compound without a rotor compound is very error prone.
Oem uses a soft cast iron for a thicker film to achieve max possible friction coefficient at expense of wear rates. As those few feet allowed oem to beat BMW and others in magazine tests.
It was assummed that in a performance vehicle wear rates were unimportant.
