Cool Getting my "new" G35!!! Brakes?

So I'm picking up my "new" G35 in about 5 hours!! And first post!! 2003 with performance package, red on beige

Excitement doesn't even begin to explain how I feel!!!

I've heard that the 03s and 04s were absolutely miserable on brakes, so I assume the first thing I should do is change out the pads and rotors so I don't have the dealer on me for a $1k brake job.

I'd like some suggestions as to what brakes to get. Not really going to upgrade the wheels, and if I do, probably staying with 18s. So any suggestions for brakes? URL's would be helpful too!!

Andits great to be here! I've been drooling over G35's for like 2 years now!

Are the brakes working for you now? If so, why don't you just keep them until they wear out - THEN replace them with something different?

Actually I don't have the brembos, at least I don't think so... (not that technically inclined if you can't tell).

Got the 18's and the spoiler.... BTW, this ride is sick!!!!!!!!!!

Swap for the Brembo's - bling bling bling. They last longer, although they're very expensive to replace down the road. And my $.02 worth is that your brake life depends greatly on how hard you are on the brakes over time. Take good care of them, downshift and what not, and they'll go for a good while.

Maverick,

I just got my '04 Black 6MT a couple months ago, and agree with your braking theory. I was explaining that to somebody the other day and he was arguing with me about downshifting for gradual deceleration. What is the consensus here? As long as you don't drop the hammer and spike the tack, I think it is better for the brakes than the strain on the transmission. Right????

I for one am a firm believer in downshifting/rev match for pretty much every stop/slowdown...gotta save those expensive roters and pads...I have never had a manual box car that suffered in any way from this treatment.

Everybody drives differently. I try to use both, downshifting and braking, and the combination of the two seems like it's working for me. Always use common sense, there are times when you can just downshift and sometimes you just have to brake, looking ahead of the car in front of you and keeping distance helps.

That's my theory at least. I asked the dealership how long I had left on my brakes the last time I was in for service (40K or so) and they said I probably had ~20K left on the back and that the fronts were only about half worn. They recommended I turn the rotors at ~60K, at which point I should be able to extend their life well beyond the average driver.

I figure if downshifting can prevent me from having to replace the pads until 60K and the rotors until 80K+ when others are only getting 30K out of both, I'll easily save enough money to pay for that new clutch when the time comes.
