Brake Pad Replacement

Hey guys, I'm nearing 30K on my '04 G35 Coupe with non-brembos using the original brake pads. Last time I had them checked out was around 18K at the dealer, said they were in good condition. I'm not having any problems with them (no noise, stops ok), but have gotten tried of all the brake dust so I plan on changing out the pads. Compared to the front tires, I rarely see much brake dust on the rear wheels. Do the front pads wear out as fast as the pads on the rears wheels? I'd rather not change out the rear pads if I don't need too. Thanks.

I have the same brakes as you and at 30k my fronts were shot. I replaced both front and rear but the rears still had over 50% left, I would guesstimate somewhere around 75% life left.

I changed my around 32k front and the back, because i got a deal for purchase them together. Front pads always go out faster then the rear pads and that is because all the weight ****s forward when you break.

Always a trade off in wearing out the 9mm thickness of pad material vs the 1mm thickness [wear limit before replacement] of the rotor.

Ideally one would go thru 2 sets of pads before rotor replacement is required from metal wear however [retrueing to reduce warpage] usually reduces the superior interval of the rotor.

Since the abrasiveness of the pad friction material varies with ambient temperature different conditions [driving style] adds additional complexity.

Thanks for the info everyone. I had the front pads changed out yesterday, there was about 3 mm left on the fronts (was getting pretty thin) and about 5 mm on the rears. I'm testing out the Hawk Performance's Ceramic pads on the fronts, only had them on for the last 10 miles so I haven't seen any noticeable dust yet. Stopping power is greatly improved, but I'm sure that's partly due to the pads being new. I have a set for the back brakes as well, but haven't installed them yet.
