True or False: you must replace the rotors with the pads

I'm thinking false, unlike my family's Mercedes which has to have the rotors replaced when changing the pads.

Anyways, my 04 G35 coupe with about 19k is squeaking and howling, and I know for a fact that the rear pads had signs of wear about 2k miles ago. I wanted to replace all 4 pads now and got some estimates. Midas quoted me at $119 for the pads with a lifetime warranty. I called Nissan (no local Infiniti dealer here) and they said that "those G35's pull hard on the brakes". He said that you would never want to just replace the brake pads without getting the rotors replaced.....for just over $800 total. He also gave me the option to get them machined which would be half as much.

So the question is, am I getting BS'ed by the Nissan guy. This is the first time I'm getting brake work done on the G and I was sure that the rotors don't have to be replaced like certain German cars....

Well if your brake pads were worn 2k miles ago and they're scraping metal on metal you probably need to get the rotors resurfaced. However, I think even if you don't, your brake pads will last you almost as long. I replaced all my brake pads and all 4 rotors @ 30k miles with Slotted Brembo rotors and Axxis Delux pads and it cost me just over $700 because I did the labor myself.

Normally one periodically measures each rotor and logs the thickness to develop a graph or feeling for the wear rate.

Since tires need to be rotated every 3-4k [even if you must demount and flip] good time to measure rotors.

Brake rotor runout gauge and digital calipers are useful additions, as is a method to vacuum out the brake fluid and wear particles.

Owners standards vary.

my first set of OEM front brakes and rotors were replaced under warranty at 30K.

To answer your questions: it depends. If your rotor does not meet the minimum thickness, then you have to replace it.

03 and 04 brakes are covered for the first 3 years or 36K. Whichever comes first.

if you have an 03 or 04, check for coverage under warranty. This was added following a class action lawsuit I believe...

You don't ALWAYS have to change the rotors when changing the pads.

You only change the rotor when it is too thin. If the rotor is warped(which it usually is) you resurface the rotors and put new pads in. When the rotor get to the minimum thickness, then it can no longer be resurfaced and you need new ones.

Generally I've come to notice with my Brembos that I need to replace my rotors after 3 sets of pads. I had my stock pads and replaced my fronts twice, resurfaced everytime. My rotor was still good when I replaced my pads most recently, but I'm going to need new ones next time for sure. Its too thin for me to resurface again.

Where did you get the slotted Brembo rotors and how much did they cost ? Also, would you know where could I find original Brembo brake pads to go with my slotted rotors ?

I have 54k miles on my original Brembo brakes and now it's time to change my front rotors and pads with the original Brembo parts. I did some search on the net to find out that a pair of slotted or cross-drilled Brembo rotors costs around $375 (versus $1,030 quoted by the dealer).

Thanks !
