Rear Alignment Off and Not Covered By Warranty - What can I do?

Hello Everyone,

I have a problem that pisses me off to no end. I have an 05 Coupe and I don't drive it too much. It now has 16k miles on it. Around 10k miles I noticed that the rear alignment is off on the passenger side. At that point you can't fix the alignment without getting new tires. The tires had some good tread left on them. So I figured I will run these tires out and get the alignment fixed and get new tires.

Let me stress that it is only the passenger rear tire that you can tell is out. Currently when you look at the rear tires the driver side has all 4 channels showing. The passenger side only shows 3 channels and it is the outside channel that is gone! Not the inside, but the outside!

So when I call up to get warranty work on it they say it isn't covered. It's is only covered for 12k miles or 1 year. Gee...sucks for me because I don't drive the car much. I know that the alignment was like this when I got the car, but I can't prove it. I ask them how one tire could be out. The say a pot hole...I say then the front should be out as well. I've never seen one tire be out of alignment....ever.

So I asked them how much for an alignment. They said $105!!! I had a Z32 TT that always got a 4 wheel alignment....$69 from the dealer. Uhm....so why is it $105?

So does anyone know how I can get them to cover this? I never saw anything stating the warranty on the suspension is 12k miles or 1 year.

Is there anything I can do or do I just have to bite the bullet? I know that these cars and the 350 have a front feathering problem. Luckly I haven't had that issue, but I know people got that covered.

Thanks

I paid $100 for a full alignment. But the mechanic also sets up AutoX cars, lowered cars, etc. He does Vettes, Minis, Bimmers, etc. etc.
Class A job. Camber was out on mine, right rear. He could not center it, but got it in limits. Then went back and made the left side the same to even it up.
Spent a lot of time to get it right all around. Learned a lot about it in the process. Worth 30 bucks more to me to have a skilled mech handle it. Some dealers farm out alignments to nearby shops too.

I should have said, I know that some people got it covered. I know it was a pain for them.

go to firestone and get the lifetime alignment for $170. align it as many times as you want. just tell them that you want them to take their time and get it right or you'll come back.

You should have taken it in for alignment at 10K miles, rotated the tires afterward and then motored on.

Plus, you would have gotten it done for free per the warranty.

No brainer then.

I'll just pay for it then. There are three things though:
1. When I first noticed it, it was around 10k miles. That was past the 1 year mark anyway. So I'm screwed regardless.
2. I don't see anywhere in the warranty info I have about the suspension. Maybe I didn't get it or I can't read/find it. Doesn't matter anyway because of point 1.
3. The damage was already done by 10k miles, unfortunately that's when I first noticed it. The wear at that point couldn't not be fixed by rotating the tire. If I had rotated the tire at that point, it would have been unsafe.

I'll just pay for it, but it really sucks that it isn't covered. I sure would like to know how one wheel gets out of alignment...but not only the one wheel...but the rear one (I could potentially see a front wheel getting out and not a rear)...and how it's wearing....very odd. These cars AFAIK are like my old Z...they are designed to have some negative camber. Why did the rear outside of the wheel wear down? Finally, I guess it's $105 for the alignment because it's Infiniti....maybe I should go to the Nissan dealership for $69 LOL.

Oh well...such is life. I thought there might be some past experiences I could draw from...guess not.

Yeah...probably need to bite the bullet on this one. Just run the rest of your rubber down then get new shoes and alignment.

When I got new wheels and shoes at 6600 miles, I got an alignment with them and it was out of spec. Meaning my alignment was probably out from the factory, though I did smack a couple pot holes before which could've throwing it out. Didn't do warranty thing cuz my oem shoes showed no unusual wear.

My Dealer only charges like $85. Independent shops about $75-$80 in my area with the in ground laser set-up.

Hmmm...hearing a lot of ppl going with Firestone and their life time coverage. Sounds like a good deal to me as long as they have the right machine and know what they're doing.
Not all shops do ya know even if they sport the same company name. So beware of that.

Example: Big O did mine after my drop and coil overs, spent a long time getting it right and did an awesome job. Big O in another town did my sons Lude and didn't know their **** from a hole in the ground and never got it quite right even after four attempts.

I have my 04 coupe alignment done at local mechanic store. First they charged me like $70 dollars because in their computer somehow didn't recognize that a coupe is rear wheel drive not all AWD like most sedan. At the end, I only paid $49. The sad thing was my front tires wear out from inside much quicker than the out side "camper", correct alignment or tire pressure wont help!!

Find a good mechanic who specializes in imports, esp. Nissan, etc. I would avoid chain stores.
