Question about brake squeal.

The other day I had to slam on my brakes when someone pulled infront of me without looking. Thankfully the breaks stopped me like a champ. Since then however, my left rear wheel has started to squeak/whine under braking. Its rather a annoying and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. It just occurs when it feels like it. My father said I've probably worn the pads out but I've only put 14.1K on it since I got it. It's been a year and a half since I got it and this was the first time I've ever really slam on the brakes. The rest of the time I usually coast to a stop since most of the red lights are on hills around here. Could my father be right or could there be another cause?

From: South Bay/So. Cal beach Cities
if their not worn down to the wear indicators(constant noise)
then maybe they are glazed from that panic stop..

have a tech check them & if they are ok . have him sand the rotor and pad..to deglaze them..noise should go away....

Just an update.

A few hundred miles after my original post I took the car to the dealer for regular maintenance. They told me my pads were down to 20-25% and that there was some hot spotting. They then offered to replace all my pads at the discounted rate of 600ish dollars. I politely refused. Anyway I'm at around 17k miles now and the squeaking is now slightly worse than it was and braking seems softer. I only have two questions: What is hot spotting? and will replacing the pads fix it or will I have to do something with the rotors too?

I have a 2003.5 G35 Sport Sedan and the continual brake squeal drives me crazy. It starts when I get under about 10mph and continues until full stop with increasing intensity. I recently had the oil changed and asked the dealer to check it out. He said the pads were fine, which they should be since he replaced them about 10K miles ago. It was under warranty then, but no longer is. I'm going to try the water spray to see if that helps but the next time the pads need replacing, I'm going to buy a set of Hawks. I understand that will help fix the squeal and dust problems, but will it also stop the premature wear? I'd like the pads to last at least 30K and I'm totally OK with the performance difference.

A little history: I'm at 40K miles now and the pads have been changed three times. The car had 17K miles on it when I purchased in Sept. 2005 and the pads and rotors had been changed at around 10K.

You have the legal right to decrease brake performance in any amount you desire, by buying longer lasting aftermarket pads and/or harder rotors.. Realistically only the courts and your insurance company can punish you concerning your selection.

I sprayed some water right onto and into the brake shoes last night and surprise surprise, it seems to have stopped the squeal...for now at least.

Wait til they dry. It's just the type of pad; try another one and see if the squeaking stops.

Hey you're right, the squeaking returned after less than 24 hours. The pads are still in good shape according to the dealer, but I'll provide an update next time I replace them. Can I add the Hawk HPS pads without replacing the rotors? Thanks
