Clicking Rear Axle...need more help

Hey guys, I've got a 03 G35 coupe with the rear axle noise problem that is common to most of the early G coupes. There is a lot of information on this forum regarding this issue so hopefully someone can help me here. I have done the work required to fix the problem in accordance with the TSB released by Infiniti. I followed the instructions very carefully...applied a sufficient amount of grease and re-torqued all nuts to the specified amount. However, the noise still remains. Though it's not as loud as it was before, the noise is still noticeable. I also get the clicking sound while driving over small speed-bumps at slow speeds. Based on the feedback, the TSB seems to be successful for those who have performed the repair. But for some reason, I didn't succeed. Perhaps, I didn't apply enough grease to the area indicated....I thought I applied a generous amount, but that's all subjective. Could the noise be something else within the suspension. Can someone explain this or maybe have an idea why the sound still remains? Thanks guys

No, I just worked on the rear passenger side since the noise appeared to be coming from that area. I listened very carefully with the windows down and I'm almost certain it's the rear passenger axle. Unless the sound is reflected to make it seem like it's on the opposite side, then it's totally deceiving my ears. According to what I hear, I can't logically say that it's on the driver side. New hardware? You mean new bolts and washers? There are 6 bolts/washers and one large center nut holding the axle assembly in place. Do you think changing the hardware could eliminate the problem?

It could be something in one of your rear tires! That happened to me. Drove me crazy until I paid Infiniti $100 to tell me something was loose in the tire.

Holly ****..!!!!! This has to be the 20th post this month on axel clicking. It amazes me that the memebers on here flame new members for posting threads about intakes and which one is better, but yet we have a thread every other day on this topic and people don't think twice about it.

Sorry for the vent, but seriously what the hell? Use the search function

EDIT: The main bolt that you take off first right between the wheel studs you literally need to greese the hell out of that bolt and then use an impact wrench for a good 6 seconds...you shouldn't have it after that.

Notice that it is always noobs who post intake threads, street racing threads, and these threads. Only difference the other 2 threads are always deleted or locked...these just take up server space.

I called a few infiiniti dealerships regarding the issue and I explained that clicking sound still remains even after performing the TSB. They suggested me to bring in the vehicle because the cause could be anything. I heard everything from loose links to something inside the differential. I guess they can't determine the root of the problem until they see and hear it for themselves. My main concern is that that these guys are just guessing at problem and replacing parts that don't require fixing.

I’m telling you that main bolt (Its the bolt right behind the red arrow in the picture I attached below) you really need to just take an impact wrench to it and impact it for about 5-7 seconds and then do it again for about another 4 seconds. Be sure that you grease as far into the drive shaft and into the hub as possible.

I know everyone on here is going to be like "what the hell", but honestly the torque specs on that bolt don't matter and none of your mechanics listen to the torque specs anyways. They take an impact wrench (after applying the grease around the splines) and just impact the hell out of it. The reason that the car makes that ticking sound is because that bolt wasn't tight enough from the factory and caused the grease to dry or leak out.

If you do this I can almost guarantee you wont have a ticking sound anymore. I watched the mechanic do it to my car and that’s all he did. They didn't even bother to take the axel out. I haven’t heard a click since then...

i would just do both axles just to be sure. when i took my car in for the TSB, my dealer wanted to charge me 600 bucks... i asked why so expensive? they tell me because of the new hardware, which i suspect will cost only 50 bucks anyway.

i would go with new hardware when replacing things... i think the clicking is caused by rubbing or whatever frictional contact by loose hardware.

Like i said before...they don't replace anything while fixing this. All they do is lube and then take an impact wrench to that main bolt.

I took my '05 6MT coupe in for the rear axle fix back in 12.05. I had to wait some 4 weeks for the longer axle bolts to arrive prior to the fix. Per many previous posts, some members had to wait much longer for the said bolts to arrive. When I had asked my service adviser about the long wait . . . I was told that Infiniti was back ordered on the said longer bolts due to the flood of requested TSB fixes.

Here is the link for the TSB:

not sure which mechanic you went to, but in the TSB it states that new hardware is strongly urged, if not required.
