Damn, I replaced my pads and rotors 14 months ago (probably a good 15k or 16k miles ago), and my pads AND ROTORS need to be replaced again. Seems soon for the rotors, but I guess I drive a lot. Anyway, 3 questions:

1) At $262/pair + tax/shipping, are the StopTech direct replacement slotted rotors on My Nismo going to be my best price and value?

2) Will cross-drilled really crack in a year's time (given how much I drive), or is this more of a myth? (not trying to start a huge debate here over this, just wanted to get a couple of opinions)

3) Is $75 a fair price for labor to replace the front pads and front rotors?

1) That's a good deal, and yes they are good rotors, or so I've read & heard.
2) Highly unlikely unless you're tracking the car a lot.

Search for RacingBrake rotors and you'll see they're a very reputable company with high-end quality. For the non-Brembo replacements, they're around $100 each which is around the same as OE replacement cost. I can get them cheaper if you like them.

2) If you don't track the car, or don't do a lot of hi-stress braking, no, they won't crack. However, if you do a lot of stop-n-go driving, or wash your wheels after a long drive, they'll crack more easily than solid blanks. Crack on drilled rotors come from rapid heat/cooling cycles or extreme heat. If you take good care of them they'll be fine.

3) $75 will buy you the tools to change your own brakes, and the brake rotors are fairly easy to swap out (relative to say, installing headers on these cars). Looks to be standard independant mechanic's rate (a bit on the low side, actually) for an hour's work, which is reasonable.

 

Very debatable. IMO, it depends on how the rotor was drilled. If it's drilled by the manufacturer themselves, then I think it's safe to say that they won't crack.

 

thanks for the input. i have an 03 w/ brembos.. so it looks like for those, its $187/rotor (not per pair), which puts the price point higher than the $262/pair i found on my nismo for the stoptechs.

so ill just go w/ the stoptechs, yeah??

If you're willing to go to $175/rotor, you should also consider the dba 4000's. Excellent rotor with an advanced venting design to keep the discs cooler, and they come in slotted. Tire rack sells 'em and so does autoanything.com

I have to replace pads and rotors all the way around. I'm looking for minimal dust and noise and realize I'll be giving up a little bite to get it (hopefully not too much). Spirited street driving only.

I think I've settled on the Hawk Ceramics for pads, but could be convinced otherwise.

Yeah. I was going to mention that my discount is lower than the price they list on their website, but even with my discount it still comes to ~$300 per pair plus shipping for the fronts. $262/pair for those StopTECHs seems like a very reasonable deal to me.
