Coilovers for dummies

hey everyone, please dont blast me about not searching. ive been looking over posts for the past hour and im still kind of confused so i want to just ask straight up.

Im a daily driver and im not looking to turn my G in to a race car. that being said, im about to get new wheels and tires and currently i am debating whether or not to purchase a coilover. I need a drop and the things i hear about springs dont have me very enthusiastic. i keep reading about people needing camber kits and dropping too low, and tires getting crapped, and shocks getting messed up etc.

anyways, i plan on gettiing 20 inch rims, and i dont want a huge drop, i only want to drop it enought so that its a nice look. ive been told the coilover will give me any drop i want.

Questions:

If i get a coilover, what parts of my car will be negatively affected?

how much of an improvement in handling does the coilover offer?

Will the coilover affect how smooth my drive is? will it be more bumpy or less? What is the diffrent between making it stiffer or keeping it springy?

what other modifications will i have to do in order to avoid other parts of my car from being damaged?

FYI - the coilover im getting is the BS Coilover. i read a review about this and i heard good things

I have these same questions. Good thread. Maybe we need a great starter thread on suspension.

I have a follow question to yours jayizratex

Do you need a camber kit when purchasing coilovers?

BCs have a HIGH front spring rate. And if you don't ever plan on changing the height, why spend the extra for coilovers?

no i do plan on changind the height...i just said i dont wanna drop it so low...my main reason for dropping the height is so that it looks good with my new wheels. however i dont wanna do that the cheap way and end up having a bunch of plablems with some springs.

and what does that mean that it has a high front spring rate???

For ur needs i would be fine with springs only. No reason spend the extra $800. If i was u, i would just get the 350z suspension and call it a day. I will say this though with BC coils that i have right now are have better ride quality than S-techs that i had before.

well thing is i want to have a great ride quality. if the coilovers will add to the value of my car, and make the ride quality better ill invest in it. but i just dont wanna mess up 5 other things in the process.

considering that im only trying to drop the ride enough to make the rims look nice...will i need a camber kit? or will i be fine with just the coilovers?

im getting the BC coilovers for 800 by the way, and after negotiating its likely ill get them for a lot less because hes willing to go down on the price. and installation will run me about 240. i was told that it normally costs about 400. is that a good deal?

any mods including the most expensive coilovers on ur car is going to drop the value of the car. Don't ever think that modding ur car is investing of some sort.

Just curious, when you say "race car" are you planning on tracking the car with 20's?

oh ouch thats certainly something to think about...didnt know that, i figured high priced mods like this would increase value.

well either way, if thats the case then i wanna definitly emphasize quality when purchasing since i plan to have my car for a while... and coilovers are alot more reliable then springs arent they?
