Metal wear indicator on brake pads? Light squeal driving me nuts.

A few months ago I replaced my pads all around with some Hawk HPS pads.

Recently on the road I'll get a very light squeal coming from the brakes, only when off of the brakes. When I hit the brakes the noise goes away, so I know it should be brake related.

A friend thinks it could be one of the little wear indicators rubbing the rotor pre-maturely. Does this sound plausible? It does sound like a metal-metal squeal/whine, so he may be right.

Thanks!
