Akebonos: Will they work with 06 rotors?

I'm purchasing parts for a brake upgrade for my 04 sedan. I love the Akebono calipers, the 4/2 piston combo is really what I'm looking for (do not need/cannot afford 12 piston calipers) but the rotors are too large for my winter and track wheels. A 14'' rotor won't fit behind a 17" sedan sport wheel.

However, I know that the 06 rotors will fit with no hassle and install easily. My only question is if it's possible to run Akebonos on the 06 rotors.

Thanks in advance!

Not a chance. Get some larger rims.

Track wheels are 17x9 with some great tires, winter wheels are 17" sedan sport wheels with new winter tires, summer wheels are coupe 18s w/ new Direzza Star Specs.

Larger wheels are not in the budget.... kinda. I had 19s on before; hated the ride, killed the response of the entire car.

I was hoping to go with an 'OEM plus' mod with the Akebono calipers. I'm not completely thrilled with the Brembos from the G coupe or the Z. They don't seem that much better than the stock, non-brembo brakes... at least not good enough to consider them an upgrade.

Guess I'll have to look at some Wilwoods.

Thanks!

how are the oem brembos not a significant upgrade from the single piston OEM brakes?

They're an upgrade, but I can't justify spending the money after driving coupes with Brembos. I can tell the difference between the Brembos and non-Brembo, but for the money, hell, I might as well put it towards a more significant aftermarket kit and have some brakes that will not fade after only a few moments on a track day. Even a few guys that are swapping pads on track days with me are still getting a lot of fade.

The amount of 'upgrade to dollar' ratio for the Brembos aren't great, imho.

Used brembos can be had for $1000-1500, show me a F/R BBK that can be had for that price with a decent pad selection

Brembos with right pads will work just as good or even better than the Akebonos.

What pads would you recommend for track days? I don't mind having to swap pads at the track.

If I pair up the Brembos with the Racing Brake 2 pc rotor, that might be a nice combo for the front.

Swap for higher temp fluid and some higher temp pads, just for track use, and you should be more than fine with the Brembos. I find it hard to believe you'll overcook them on the track. 350Z guys w/Brembos aren't. I never had any issues with fade when I auto-x'ed my coupe even with the OEM Brembo setup (factory pads and brake fluid).

There are two G35 coupes that I see at track events. I'm not sure what pads they're using, but I know one of them talks about losing his brakes every once in a while. The other guy has only had it happen twice.

Not sure what fluid they use, though.

What'd be funny is if neither of them turn off the VDC. First time I was out I forgot to turn it off. I know that gave my brakes a workout.

dont mean to step on anybody's toes but the akebono upgrade he speaks of from g35parts.com comes with all the necessary parts for <1500 with rotors and all....

Follow up question though for the parts guru's would the M/C maybe even booster have to be upgraded with this setup?

That doesn't come with the brackets to bolt up to the g35's. Read the description. There also aren't very many track pad options out there yet either, which is why brembos are still the best track option at this point in time for g35's on a budget IMO

I'm not sure the sedan sport wheels would clear the brembo or akebono calipers (regardless of rotors used) Same with the 17x9s. Wheel width isn't an indicator of caliper clearance. But some 17s will clear the oem Brembos. Coupe 17s and oem Z 17s "should" clear.
