Just got KWV3, should I install myself or take to dealer?

I did a quick search on here and found nothing related to this topic - do you guys think it's something you can do at home yourself or should I bring to dealer? Any rough idea of how long or what they charge?

Is there any DIY tutorial on this subject?

thanks!

what is KWV3?

The Stimulation Dec 30, 2009 01:06 PM

Why the dealer? They'll charge too much. I would take it to an automotive shop. Where are you located? If you're in So Cal, I can refer you to several.

I've personally swapped my suspension twice, it is a pain because it can be time consuming and the previous time I needed an extra hand because I needed someone to stand on my rotors/calipers in the front so I can get the d@mn thing in the right position. Coilover installs should not be more than 100-150.

KW Variant 3's

This thread belongs in the suspension section

Do you have the tools needed to do the job? Jack, stands. Any air tools (no required but makes things alot easier).

This will give you a good idea of what it will take.

Sorry, I'm new to this site and didn't know about the suspension section :thewave: Thanks for the linky!

I have spring compressor, jack, air tools, and all the basic car tools but wasn't sure if it's a two person job. I will look at the link you provided! :)

donpisto: thanks for clarification, yes it's the KW Variant 3 coils

I'm not too sure, but do the V3's require any additional installation? I know they have rebound adjustment along with dampening adjustment. Does the dampening come with additional hardware or anything or is it just plug and play like other coilovers? That's another thing to consider.

No worries newb! :D

Sounds like you might be able to pull it off yourself since you seem to have the tools needed. It's not hard to do. Just take your time.

In that DIY I linked you too, the guy removes the upper A-arm. That is not a required step. All you really need to do is remove the cotter pin and the 17mm bolt holding the suspension arm to the A-arm. That will give you access to remove the strut. Something else I always do as well is remove the top bolt on the end links which will give you a little more play to take the strut out.

Good luck.

Forget that, lol. Been through too many. Next one is air-sus. UAS ftw, let them do the install too, save me a headache lol.

Sorry for the thread jack. I just got my KW's as well. I am wondering on the rear install. There is a video made by BytheBay located in the DIY section but only covers the front spring install and I think the shock is not stock or the car was a coupe, not sure. Does anyone have details on the rear section?

Thanks!

G35Papa Dec 30, 2009 03:39 PM

^The install for coupes and sedans are the same. The rear is the easiest to do....look at the link I posted up above on a spring install. It's basically the same, unless you are running true coilovers (strut in the rear as well) then it's even easier....you just put the strut in and remove the rear spring.

It's definitely a great investment. Me personally, I want to ride to the point where the fenders are on the rim, or half inch above. Hopefully end of 2010 I'll have em installed, we'll see.
