Brake fluid level
Brake fluid level
Just wondering if the brake fluid level in the reservoir reading half-way between MAX and MIN (COLD) will significantly affect brake pedal pressure and feel.
I would NOT fill it! Leave it be. When it hits low enough to trigger your lights, it's time to put new pads on. If you fill it up and the pads wear out, you'll need to siphon brake fluid out to do the work.
good point, and if you don't siphon the break fluid out before you start, it will just overflow out of your master cylinder (not good). The brake fluid goes down gradually as the brake pads wear out. When you get new pads and your brake pistons are pushed back, the fluid level should rise again, unless the proper amount of brake fluid was never in system in the first place.
Thanks for the posts.
It's not that the fluid is going down in level. Before I last had my pads and front rotors replaced the fluid level had dropped, causing the VDC/ Brake Warning Lights to stay on. I temporarily added more about 1/2 oz of brake fluid to the reservoir to de-activate the warning lights until I could have the brakes replaced.
The shop that installed the brakes apparently didn't bother to remove the excess fluid as it read well over the MAX mark. So I did have in fact siphon the excess fluid out likely when the fluid was HOT.

If your pads are fairly new then (under 5K miles) you should be ok topping it off to the 'max' line.

The pads and front rotors have about 20K miles w at least another 20K remaining. This morning I did add another 4 capfuls of brake fluid to bring the level 3/4 to MAX. Even though temps were in the 20s this morning, it seems that there is more initial brake force available per pedal travel. Perhaps it is the "Placebo Effect".
