Rotors

Just took my car in for the 75k maintenance - asked them to check the brakes, as I heard some slight squeaking when going in reverse.

they said that my front brake pads were at 3/32, and needed to be replaced. they also mentioned that the rotors need to be replaced as well.

what concerned me here, is that when I took it in for a regular oil change 3 months ago, I asked them to inspect the brakes to make sure that when I do get the pads replaced, the rotors will not need to be changed as well. during that checkup, they "visually" examined the brakes, and give it good marks.

they also told me that rotors typically last about 25k miles.

unfortunately, I'm not a DIY when it comes to cars (although I wish I was), so this is something that I have neither the time or tools to perform on my own.

any thoughts to the validity of the first two statements?

thanks!

depending on your driving habits and i'm going to assume that you are still on your original rotors since you didn't mention you have replaced them before. At 75k is definitely time to replace. It is actually easier than you think. i'm not that mechanically inclined either but my bro and i replaced my front rotors and pads in about 2 hours with a couple of beer breaks in there. You will same money just by buying the rotors and pads yourself and have the dealer replace them if you don't have a buddy that can help you with that. Buy OE stuff online and you wil lsave the high mark up the dealer will quote you.

For example, when i was replacing my rotors, the infiniti dealer quoted me 500+ dollars for the front job. Rotors, pads and labor. I got the rotors and pads online under $200 and the bro and i did the job in 2 hours.

Ask for a measurement on the front rotors that supposedly need to be replaced. If they are well above the minimum rotor thickness, then you don't need to replace them yet. If they are not pulsating/vibrating, and they are above min thickness, you should be able to get some more mileage out of them. It does depend, however, on driving habits, conditions, etc. as G35sedan03 mentioned.
