What to replace stock rotors/pads with?

Just spent 30 mins reading the brake forum here and can't really seem to get a clear consensus.

04 G35 Sedan 61k miles

If have fronts that are totally new rotors/pads, but the back rotors have heat cracks. Infiniti says the 04 rotors/pads oem are terrible so I'm wondering what to switch to.

When the fronts go I'll end up doing the same thing, so I'm looking for something legit, an upgrade is fine if it isn't a big increase in price.

It's a shame because when the OEM brakes are working, they work great.

Thoughts? Thanks.

no thanks. Looking for something much cheaper.

Was just curious if there was a consensus on a rotor/pad combo that is better then oem. Why would I put $550 rotors on a totally stock 04 sedan auto.

I was/am in the same boat as you. I went with R1 Concepts Eline rotors and posi quiet pads. They had a combo deal for all rotors and pads for $270. I should be getting everything on monday and hope to get it installed next weekend.

Try searching through rock auto and getting price info on Raybestos premium rotors combined with Stoptech Street Performance pads (Centric). It will outperform the stockers for a good price. My brother in law has that combo on his Lexis IS300 and it works awesome. My wife has Wagner basic rotors and Wagner Thermoquiet on her ES330 and they work equally as well as the oem previously used. Both setups were really inexpensive. My only advice is to use several coats of high temp gray or black on the rotors a few days prior to install as the hats will show rust if you don't. The friction area will rub clean within a few careful stops. If you want to spend a little bit more you can get the Centric Premium rotors which have that heavy duty E coating. In the end, everything will rust. I remember using Brembo style rotors in my old Maxima which had a zinc coated rotor hat and I remember that held up nicely for years. The same rotor can be found on my S13 racecar and that sucker has had them since '03? No rust lol. Gotta pay a little bit more for that as well.

That being said, I have a dirt cheap $379 setup on my G35 which consists of 88rotors slotted rotors (sprayed black), Axxis ULT pads from the same vendor, SS/teflon lines from a vendor here (I forget which one), and Valvoline Synthetic brake fluid locally. Works awesome and is definitely an upgrade over stock! It could have been cheaper still if I went with blank rotors and google shopped the brake lines and not gone here lol. Not bad eh?

How did your rear rotors get heat cracks???

IMHO for normal street use you just want good quality parts that won't upset the bias too much. You should probably use the same pad in back as in front. For me it's Centric premium rotors and hawk hps pads all around.

The OE pad composition is dusty, short lived, and designed for good cold performance. That's not "bad" per se (it's freaking awesome if you need to stop fast on cold brakes), it's just the set of compromises that the designers built into the car.

I'll 2nd Centric premiums. Excellent quality rotor at a very cheap price.

As for pads, I really like the Project Mu's, but as you say, they are pricey. But if budget is an issue, check out Satisfied OEM on Tire Rack. Cheap and supposedly quite good. I've also heard the Stoptech Street Performance is good. I'm not a fan of Hawk HPS - terrible cold bite, especially for a stock street driven car.

I've had nothing but problems with the oem brakes (see thread I made about it) The fronts I got replaced very recently for free after fighting them so they are new but oem.

The rear rotors were machined by dealership before I took control of the car, about 6,000 miles ago. Now they have head cracks.

The plan is to replace rear rotors and pads with something that acts just like the OEM (or better). It's a daily driver, never taken to track, wouldn't mind more performance but like I said the goal is for it to be as good or better then stock. When they WORK, I love the oem brakes. Stops on a dime cold or hot, but I've just had such issues with them. Plus the noise + brakedust.

Right now I'm considering the R1 Concepts Eline rotors and posi quiet pads just as 'bigtime' is.

When the front ones die, I'll replace the fronts with whatever I end up going with in the rears.

In that case I would go with the Centric premium plain rotor and OE pads. Don't know anything about the R1 Concepts rotors, whether you are looking at a drilled, slotted or what. But my advice is to stick with a high quality PLAIN rotor, especially in rear. If you were racing/tracking we'd be having a different conversation, of course.
