Brakes question about brembo calipers

ive been searching (here, edmunds, car and driver, google..) and cant find a pro/con list about the brembo option. ive HEARD some bad things about them, as in them going through rotors like brake pads, and even one occasion of them exploding.. is this bs? or does having the brembo option have a high upkeep cost? sorry for pissing off the search *****..

Exploding? Nope, never heard that one!

As for upkeep cost, that is going to vary greatly depending on driving style, commute, climate, etc. As for my experience, I can't say mine wear that much faster than any other brakes I've had. In 37K miles and 6.5 years, here's what I've done:

Replaced front pads @17.5K
Replaced front rotors and rear pads @27K
Replaced front pads at @34.5K

So, I am now on my 2nd set of front rotors and original rear rotors, and my 3rd set of front pads & 2nd set of rear pads. FYI - I tend to be a bit conservative and replace front pads early, so mine actually had a bit of meat still left on them, as did the rotors, when I replaced them.

If you buy only OEM rotors then yes they can be expensive to replace (~$400/rotor from Nissan/Infiniti), however there are very good aftermarket options that aren't much more expensive than non-Brembo brakes. For instance, I run Centric Premium rotors (~$65-70/rotor) with Project Mu NS pads, and they perform as well as OEM so far, at least as far as street braking is concerned. Wear seems to be about the same as far as I can tell.

^^My car has 70K on it and I've replaced my front rotors once and my pads twice. Ive changed my rear pads once so it sounds like you drive a bit more agressively than i do. LOL I still had about 30% of my pads left when i replced them so there was plenty of meat left on the pads.

I once had my car in the Nissan dealer and the guy quoted me for a break job ( i did not ask for one) and it was $1300 for the front and $600 for the rear.

Vendors on here will also get you a good price on pads/rotors.

nghiars - One factor to consider is that 95% of my driving is city/suburban commuting with lots and lots of stop lights, so my brake applications per mile is quite high. Oh and also had a couple of autocrosses on my first set of pads and rotors. :-)

haha thats why im actually surprised (in a good way) my pads/ rotors have lasted this long.. my daily commute is all city/suburban traffic as well.. must be the autocross.

'05-06 front rotors are close in size, rears are a fair bit smaller. Stopping power is there, but feel and modulation not as good as the Brembos. Brembos should resist fade a bit better (comparing OEM to OEM pads).

I would say by comparison to the non-brembo setups the Brembo far out perform the other stock brakes. 60-0 braking is not the end all be all of brake performance.

My G37 come stock with the Akebono bbk. If there was an option to get the Brembos, I would have got it in a heartbeat. The only con to the Brembos IMO was the brake dust. I never tracked my coupe and had a good 50/50 mix of city and hwy driving. I think I replaced the front pads around 25K or so and the rear pads a few thousand later.

is it better to spend the money on the brakes for stopping before you hit someone or having an accident report and insurance claim?
