Rotor / Pad advice
Rotor / Pad advice
I am wanting to replace the stock non-brembo rotor with some slotted/drilled rotors and am looking for any advice. I was looking at the Z1 motorsports package. http://www.z1motorsports.com/350_g35...oducts_id=2122 Also, I have read mixed reviews on the Hawk HPS pads. Can anyone give me their personal experience.... Thanks
FYI, drilled and slotted rotors won't stop you any faster, if anything slower. Same goes for pads. The OEM pads dust, but there's not much out there that offers superior braking performance for the street as well as performance driving, save for longer road course events.
I know that I will get crap for saying this, but I want the rotors for looks and the pads for less brake dust. I would still like some feedback though as to if this is a quality setup. By quality I mean will not warp, and last a long time, no rusting...... Thx
As far as quality goes, Z1's rotors are top notch. They are actually manufactured at Brembo. Hawk pads are pretty good too but personally I like axxis pads a bit more. A little better bite and less dust.
I just bough some Centric rotors for my front and have no complaints here. I noticed some improvement in braking, although that could be due to the fact that my old rotors were a little worn.
For pads, I just upgraded from the Akebono ProACT's to Akebono Street Performance pads. I could not be happier with these. Here's a little breakdown of each (the ProACT's are cheaper, FYI).
ProACT's:
- A little worse initial bite than OEM pads, but seems a little better than OEM when you hit the brake pedal hard. Overall, braking seems about the same as OEM or maybe very slightly worse.
- MUCH less dust than OEM. My wheels stay clean for a few weeks at least before noticing any dust on them.
- Silent. Did not hear any noise from braking when on my car.
- These last MUCH longer than OEM pads. I used them for about 10,000 miles, and they still looked almost new. Probably 85-90% of the pad was still there. OEM pads would have been at 50% at that point, or worse.
- Overall, I would take these over OEM any day.
Street Performance:
- Was slightly disappointed in braking performance at first, because it seemed the same as the ProACT's (which isn't bad, but these are supposed to be better). Well, after letting these settle in some more, the braking is AWESOME. The initial bite is similar to OEM and they have better braking when slamming the pedal down. They are just as good in the rain as dry. These are the pads to get for best brake performance on the 03-04 G (non-brembo)!
- These are not silent like the ProACT's were. I can hear some squealing when stopping. I'm not sure if maybe they need to break in more, or if it's because of the different brake grease I used this time, or if it's just how they are. I'll update after using them some more.
- Brake dust seems similar to the ProACT's, which is basically none.
- Overall, best brake pads I've ever used. Highly recommended.

I have Centric rotors that are drilled and slotted by rotorwork.com and Akebono ceramic pads.
Rotors for looks, pads for lack of dust.
The work for exactly that, but they don't have the initial bite of the OEM setup.

You have the ProACT's I assume?
I don't see the centric brand on their website.......

Only about $20 more.
