wheel bearings - who has replaced?

My rear bearings sounded like I was driving an airplane.
I replaced a front bearing after humping a curb as it was a noticeable hum when turning, felt even in the steering wheel.
The only bearing I have not changed is the front, passenger and I am thinking it's making a slight hum when I turn at slow speeds.

Awww nuts. So what is the failure process like for these things. Do they seize and heat up and catch fire or explode or something? The Infinity people told me it'd be about $600 and I'm not in a hurry to give them that kind of money. I really wanna do this myself, but they told me that on the rears the axle has to come out or something. I'm guessing the bearing assembly has to be packed with grease or something too and that may be a bunch of stuff I don't need to be fooling with.

They don't seize or fail right away. Overtime it may separate and make removal more difficult and expensive, by having to replace the whole spindle. The noise might get louder and I've noticed it makes shifting between gears more difficult when driving a standard with a busted wheel bearing.
The axle does need to come out. It might be tricky if you don't remove it. The axle is not hard to take out. All you need is a long pipe, 1/2" breaker bar, and 32mm (I think) socket.
Nothing need to be packed with grease. You can buy the bearing from the dealer and have it pressed onto the hub you take off your car.

I just had both of my rear wheel bearings replaced on my 2004 Coupe with 48,000 miles. The noise was getting so bad that anyone sitting in the passenger seat would comment on it. I originally thought it was my tires and had them replaced. The dealership replaced them under the Infiniti Elite warranty. Who would think that wheel bearings go bad after 48,000 miles? I may be an old timer, but I always remember wheel bearings lasting way over 100,000+ miles! Another example of cost cutting by today's manufacturers.

My front driver bearing is finished and it was very easy to notice. Just find a good road and then turn to the right a bit and then turn to the left a bit. When I turned to the right a bit, it made the driver side bearing to give a loud hum and vibrations. There is no play at all on the driver's wheel.
