brakes wearing down
brakes wearing down
2006 AT G35 sport coupe (non-brembo) 38K miles
This is my first brake job and it is the rear brakes that have less than 3mm left. the fronts have a decent 6mm left. I can feel the difference. I'm riding on the 19" rays and wider tires with spacers and have no alignment issues.
Is it normal for the REARS to outlive the fronts? I thought the fronts bear the brunt of braking. Did my rears go out first b/c I ride them too much? make too many fast stops? Or is the VDC/traction kicking in and braking the rear wheels without telling me? (I rarely see SLIP SLIP SLIP on my gauge when giving it the gas).
So is this normal? I plan to go back with OEM pads/rotors unless slotted/drilled decrease the 60-0 panic stopping distance (which I do not think it does).

If it were my car, I'd be replacing both front and rear asap. You are correct, the fronts do the bulk of the braking. If your rear calipers are not moving freely on the slides and binding or sticking, this may lead to premature rear wear. Get a proper brake job done. The calipers come off, slides are cleaned, rust removed, then lubed up. Also, the pad 'ears' should get a bit of brake grease.
If your tires are not locking up/abs not kicking in in your 60-0 panic stops, then stronger brakes (calipers/pads/rotors) will only lock up/induce abs sooner. For shorter braking distances, get tires with higher friction coefficient.

My rears wore out before the fronts as well. I've read here that others with the later non-Brembo brakes had the same experience. I think the car does a good job of balancing the brake load front to rear, but the front pads start at 11mm and the rears at 8.5.
