It is basically some cosmetic upgrade for the vast majority of people. Same with cross drilled/slotted rotors. Basically kills your brake pads for no improvements UNLESS you regularly can get performance oriented pads to fade, ie. track conditions.
that's like saying, unless you track your car you wont get anymore performance out of a TT or SC. just because your not taking your car to the limit constantly doesn't make it any less capable. if you were referring to OEM vs OEM Brembo/Akebono then i'd agree with you, but a legit 6/4 BBK will weigh equal to or less than OEM, w/a much larger friction surface. additionally the braking feel from multiple pistons gives much better feed back. obviously tires play a HUGE role as well but speaking from a strictly "braking" component perspective, BBKs make all the difference. also panic stop distances aren't the only measure of "braking performance."

OP, i have a stoptech set for sale in the classifieds>
I'm also a fan of Brembo, but from what I can see Akebonos still aren't a terrible choice for a BBK. I don't expect BBKs to be slim or small, to have as much of a pad selection, or be the most light weight.
