Humming noise coming from tires(??)

Hello all

I have 04 g35 coupe base. there is a humming noise coming from the wheels. it occurs when im goin between 30 and 50 mph. any speeds over or under that and i do not hear any humming. I took the car to the dealer a while back and mentioned the noise. after they inspected it, they found that my compression rod bushings where shot and thats what was causing the humming.

after replacing the compression rods and getting an alignment, the humming is still there. i pulled off the wheels and did the wheel bearing check (rocking the wheel at 6 and 12) but there was no play.

i replaced the rotors and pads a while back, but i dont think that has anything to with it, since the humming was there even before i did the replacement.

any ideas??

thanks
Martin

It's either a bearing/bearings going bad or your tires are cupped/feathered. The way you checked the wb's is a good one but not completely foolproof.

I had the same problem with my '04 G. I immediately thought it was the bearings because I had an '04 Z with the same miles and the bearings were bad.

The bearings on my Z had no play in them whatsoever when I did the bearing test but they were as loud as an earthquake when I drove. So going by that test I wouldn't have thought it was bearings.

On my G I changed both front bearings and I still got that humming sound. Turns out my tires were cupping. I put different wheels and tires on and the sound went away.

Your problem sounds like tires. It only makes the sound between a specific MPH just like my G. A bearing would most likely be doing it at other speeds as well. Another way to check if it's bearings is while you're driving, swerve from side to side and it should get louder when you go to one side.

Does it get louder as you stop also? My G did that as well until I changed out the tires.

Good luck!

Any time I hear anyone with the "Humming Noise" I advise them to look closely at the inside of their front tires. What begins as a humming noise ends up a Roar. Seriously check the insides of your front tires, something your alignment guys should have advised you about....Gary

Same thing happened to me. Thought it was wheel bearings. Changed wheels and tires and the sound went away.

Be careful, the insides can wear down to the cords and would not realize till its dangerous. Vibrations?

Since you live in the valley and if you want to get this problem resolved call Sean @ 716-6744 he manages Precision Z in Canoga Park. Best alignment shop in the valley and he can get you a deal on tires which you probably need....Gary
