Rear driver side wheel - squealing - not when braking

I've had my G for 8 years now. Been a pretty good car except for the common problems (I've had all of them).

Yesterday I developed a metallic (metal on metal) sounding squeal from the driver side rear wheel. Naturally, I jacked up the rear end, and put her in neutral while I slowly turned the wheel and was able to replicate the squealing. So, next I removed the brake pads, thinking it could possible be a wear indicator or some defect in the pads. I began rotating the rotor and the squealing persists (even though there are no brake pads in the caliper) so I know it is not brake related.

My next logical step would be to remove the rotor, and determine if it is some sort of defect in the rotor or if something is possibly trapped between the rotor and the dust shield, causing the squealing.

Any ideas?

brakes don't need to be applied for the pad indicator to make the scraping sound

Maybe a bent dust shield?
