Vehicle Weight
Vehicle Weight
Hi, I am trying to verify the vehicle weights for the sedan and coupe. I have found that the sedan weighs 3,369 and the coupe weighs 3,412. This just doesn’t make sense? Can anyone verify these numbers? Although there is only a 47lb difference, I would guess that the coupe is lighter due to it’s better performance than that the sedan. An additional 20HP and 10 lb/ft would not equate to a half second difference in the quarter! (14.1 vs. 14.6) Please advise.

Try the search feature (in the black bar at the very top of the screen). It'll help you find answers to your questions faster. For example, this very topic was just discussed three days ago:

Re: Vehicle Weight
Thanks, but I had already performed a search and found that no one really stated any valid points regarding why the coupe is 47-78lb heavier than the sedan. Some members posted that the coupe has extra heavier structural supports or additional rear glass window. But this doesn’t make any sense? The sedan has a longer wheelbase, which translates to more frame and floor-pan mass. Additionally, the sedan has rear doors, additional glass and added roofline. Has any one actually weighed their coupe or sedan? Most drag strips have a weight scale. Please advise.
Re: Vehicle Weight
If you want to know the reason why the coupe weighs more than the sedan you would have to contact Infiniti Consumer Affairs to get a straight answer.
Re: Vehicle Weight
Forgive me, I thought one of the reasons for the existence of this form was to inquire and disseminate information regarding the G35 coupe and sedans. I will continue to do my research and forward any verified information regarding the weight discrepancy of the coupe and sedan. Thanks.
Re: Vehicle Weight
Yes the forum is a place to disseminate information. However unless an engineer involved in the design decides to answer this thread, most of the guys here can only simply offer you "guesses" as to why this is the case.
If you do get an answer, please post back. I am interested too!

Re: Vehicle Weight
Np man. Ask way! Sorry, I don't know the weight question or I'd answer it.

Actually, the wheel base of the sedanand the coupe are identical at 112.2". It's the overall length that is different with the sedan with the sedan being 4.3" longer.
The thing that surprises me is that the sedan at 5.51 inches, is 0.79" lower than the coupe! I would have thought that the coupe would have been designed with less ground clearance.

Re: Vehicle Weight
I'll throw this out: Some of the weight would have to be the wheels. The Coupes run on either 17x10s or more commonly 18"s (not sure if they're 10s). Sedans run on 16x7 or 17x7 wheels. I'd guess that accounts for around 18 pounds. You also have to figure the Coupe has bigger brakes in order to handle the extra inertia of the heavier wheels, so that's a little more weight there as well. I don't know which tires the sedan uses or if there's any meaningful weight difference there. The second exhaust on the Coupe should also account for some weight, not sure how much. Maybe 10 pounds (I think I read the Coupe's entire unit weights 27 pounds). The remainder could easily be structural, but I think wheels, tires, brakes, and exhaust get you most of the way there. Who knows how the suspensions compare. Yeah, the Sedan is a little longer, but that's probably all trunk (hollow space). It wouldn't offset the other stuff.

Re: Vehicle Weight
Ack. They're not 10's. The sedan uses 16x6.5's or 17x7's. The coupe has either 17x7.5 front/17x8 rear, or 18x8 all around. There is still a pretty good weight difference, though.
And a good set of forged aftermarket rims can drastically reduce that bit of the weight, if you're concerned enough about it to blow a grand or more on rims (not including tires).

Re: Vehicle Weight
I was hoping someone would call me on that during the last two times I suggested they might be 10s, since all I did was directly take a tape measure to them, but nobody said otherwise. From what point to what point am I supposed to be measuring? They're about 10 inches from lip to lip, more than 9 excluding lips (again, mine are the 17" coupe wheels).
I've been looking quite a bit at Fikse rims, which even at 17x10 are reputedly lighter than the 16" sedan rims, but the price (on those few occassions I've seen them sold) looks intimidating.

Re: Vehicle Weight
That I I'm not sure of. According to page 10-8 of the Owner's Manual, 18x8 is as wide as they get.
These two tech articles from TireRack, if you look at the pretty pictures, seem to imply that you should measure the width inside the rim.

Re: Vehicle Weight
The rear end gear is different in the 2 cars also. I believe the Sedan gear is about 3.3 to 1, and the Coupe is about 3.5 to 1.That alone would be worth a couple of tenths.

if you're so concerned take out the spare tire and save like 30-40pds.
