brake fluid sensor replacement

I'm having a problem, possibly related to the brake fluid level sensor which I'm trying to replace.
Is there a way of removing the sensor without removing the master cylinder? It appears to be held in place by plastic tab but there doesn't seem to be a way of pulling the sensor out after it's been pushed into place.
The photo shows the sensor with the connector removed, looking up from under the master cylinder.

na those are usually built in to the reservoir, if theres an issue you replace the entire thing

I was eventually able to remove the old sensor by feeling around and jamming in a small flat screwdriver to release the clip. The new sensor seems to have solved the problem however, I have no idea how it works. I've never seen a non-contact brake fluid sensor or even one without a float before.
