Wheel Hop!

Hey, G35Driver.

My first post on this (or any) G35 forum (I did search “wheel hop” to no avail).

Never thought I’d buy a Japanese car but I just fell in love with the G35. My previous cars were a 1984 Firebird, 1991 Formula Firebird (305 TPI 5MT), 1989 Turbo Trans Am, 1969 Firebird, 1972 Cutlass convertible, 1986 Jimmy, and last but not least a 1991 Taurus SHO. If you’re wondering about the gap from then to now...law school.

It’s hard to believe that my 1991 Formula (before I put headers, ram air, high energy ignition, Hurst shifter, and a Flowmaster exhaust) did 15 seconds in the quarter mile and that was fast in 1996.

Enough said, I love the G35 but the wheel hop drives me crazy. I know that I should just “learn to drive” but the thought of tearing up my drive train to “learn” is not appealing. Are their any suspension parts to cure (or at least help) this? My Formula hopped when I first bought it, but replacing the Goodyear GT4’s with Eagle GSC’s along with the HP increase of the headers completely eliminated this.

Has anyone else noticed you can kick the tail out all day w/o a trace of wheel hop? But point the nose straight...

My 03 did not hop. My 05 does. If the tires start to spin, at any speed, the car starts hopping like the engergizer bunny. The first time I 1/4 miled the 05 I screwed up and spun the tires, hopped and the transmission popped into neutral. Yeah, that sucks. Even after switching to 05 coupe sport springs and d-specs I still get the hop.

The downside of independent rear suspension is wheel hop..........really really stiff rear sway bar to make the rear less independent.

On or off? Because I would think the VDC would cut power and not allow the tires to spin.

I only get wheel hop when the VDC is off. Launching with the VDC on causes my car to nearly stall.

For the driving I do now, the trade off of an independent rear suspension is well worth it. Man that car handles.

BTW I have a bone stock 05 6MT.
