Alignment problem
Alignment problem
Is there something wrong with my car? I've tried to get an alignment and the shop couldn't get it into spec on one wheel. I did get into an accident before, however, I have changed the crossmember in the rear, control arms have been changed out, new coilovers, installed SPC camber arms /w toe bolt and the accident was on the right side. Not the left. Also, I checked my frame on a machine and everything is completely straight.
Specs for rear that I want:
Camber -.5
Toe - 0
The right side is able to get into spec easily. However, they said that the left side won't get into alignment no matter how they tinker with it. It goes from -1.6 camber, 0 toe, to 1 toe, -.7 camber. I really don't understand what is going on.
Should I:
a) Try to get an alignment elsewhere?
b) Replace the latteral and radius arms in the rear for the right side?
c) Go with a different kit?

If the shop can't say why get a second opinion
It sounds to me like you have to equipment to get into spec no matter how slammed you go. If the shop cannot tell you what is stopping them from getting it into spec then I would go to another shop. I assume that you are in a race shop getting an alignment with all those adjustments, but if not go to one and get corner weighted while your at it. If nothing else a race shop should be able to tell you what is broken.
Are you going to a shop with the "sears" or laser unit, or the old type optical?
The new one has the targets that are up above the front of the car.
I had a problem with a control arm in my last car, their alignment said perfect, they sent it to another shop, perfect. This thing pulled to the side like you couldnt imagine.
I finaly took it to a place with the new type alignment machine, I was -1.40 on something or other for left-rear. They adjusted it and rode perfectly forever after that.

No, it's not even that. My car tracks perfectly straight. It's just they can't do a certain spec for me on one side which is weird because the other side can get into the spec no problem.
Hopefully you measure with your weight in drivers seat as Camber can change roughly 0.8 degrees per inch drop from weight in seat........assume roughly 1" per 230 pounds in seat.
Same thing applies with fuel full vs empty.
I always take posted alignments with grain of salt since most don't specify variables............not unusal after an accident to end up replacing everything to get it perfect........the forces can transfer from the hit side to other side and bend things there.
