As stated in the article, that kit was a prerelease kit on a a preproduction car and the article is in fact quite old. It was even noted in the article that the excess negative camber brought on by the aftermarket springs was responsible for the variation. A more recent representation of expected performance available here:

As you see you have to spend to increase acceleration or braking horsepower.

2.5% improved stopping distances are a big deal and difficult and expensive to accomplish.

Even with RE040, tires are the limiting item to decreasing stopping distance.

Need tires that wear out in a few thousand miles.

Yeah, tires are definitely the biggest factor. You can have the strongest brakes, but with tires that don't grip or lack tread, you won't stop any better than the OEMs.

"with tires that don't grip or lack tread,"

Tread is only partially useful in wet [tread to void ratio] and not at all useful in dry.........fast wearing slicks that have fresh sticky not hardened rubber.

Its really quite interesting to see the effect of tires on similarly equipped cars as in the recent RSX challenge.

http://www.stoptech.com/company_info...hallenge.shtml

The 1st place car used Hoosier A3S05:

While the 2nd place car ran Yokohama A032R-S:

Both cars used the same StopTech brake kit but the Hoosiers stopped 14 feet shorter.
