Local VW has a 2005 6MT with premium package and aero package. Athens Blue with black leather.

20500 miles.

Only downside is some dings on the front bumper.

They're asking $25,992. I'm going to tell them i'll give them $25.5K since i'm going to have to get a new bumper and see if they'll bite.

What do you guys think?

Ask for $1000 off, then another $500 off for the dings, since that's what a new bumper will cost you. You're being too generous asking just $500 off their list price, and only because of the dings. if they balk, walk away. Chances are they'll call you back....

KBB retail value is like $31.5K or so.

I just called and they agreed to $25.5K.

About asking for $1K off, he told me he was originally going to list it for $26,992 but put it at $25,992 so it would sell fast (since it's at a VW dealer) so asking for another $1K off more than likely wouldn't work.

+1. The "walk-away" thing works pretty well. I got pretty good deals on 2 of my cars that way, and a friend of mine recently got a dealer to come down from $15K list to $12K by walking away as well...IMO edmunds and KBB values are inflated, be it trade-in or retail value. Hard as I tried, I've never gotten edmunds/KBB value for a trade in, and on the flip side, I've never paid anything close to edmunds/kbb value for a car from a dealer....

To the OP....Enjoy your new car

I would say $25.5K its a good deal.
But agree with the other guys too that you would have never known if you could have got it for lower.

But knowing you got a good deal.... you can now go aand enjoy it.... assuming you bought it.

Nice... I think the trade off (more luxury for less performance) is worth it. Plus you won't have people revving at you at every light....
