Red face Looking towards a G35, very interested, need some input...

hey guys, im looking at buying a used g35 in the price range of 20-23000, i have a jeep i am gonna sell, and i love the g35s. have you guys experienced alot of problems? i heard there is a problem with the piston rings on the 6mts. is this something i should be worried about, how would i tell a car i might potentially buy has this particular problem before buying, i dont wanna get stuck with a beat engine. how about warranties, and such are they important. what kind of prices am i looking at to get a warranty, or warranty extension on a used one??
thanks guys, cant wait to hear from ya

If you're not looking for a 6MT, you don't have to worry about the oil consumption issue; it is only on the 2005-2007 6MT G35s.

Beyond that, the G is mechanically a rock solid car; as long as the car was maintained, it's going to last a LONG long time.

What exactly would you like to know about the G35?

about warranties, i was also very interested in th 6mt, in those year ranges is the oil problem a big enough issue to sway me towards an automatic? and what exactly is a rev up engine, higher red line? and what models have this engine?

I think the consensus is that the rev-up motor tended to have leacky piston rings which caused excessive oil burning. Some people also think that the oil problem comes from using synthetic oil to early and not letting the engine break in properly. Whatever the reason is, Infiniti/Nissan is replacing motors in those affected. In your price range you could get a 05-06 couple or sedan or a low miles 04 with every option. I'd go with the 05-06 since in the interior is much nicer and the leather is of a better quality. Don't get excited about the bose audio either, it sounds terrible. I just have the base + sunroof and paid 24.5 a year ago. Prices on used ones came down a lot since then because of the economy and dealers being motivated to move the new ones for good prices.

If you budget allows, you might be able to get a 07 sedan with around 20K miles. I've had 07 loaners, and the HR motor is worth it. Plus the interior build quality feels more solid.

I have a 06 sedan AT which is the non-rev up and I have 35K miles and it uses almost no oil (maybe 1/8 of a quart in 3250 miles).

The warranty on Gs is 4year / 60k and then 7y 70k on the powertrain.

Have fun with the search!

so you are saying if i get one used with a warranty, and the engine has a problem it wouldn't be hard to get a new engine out of the service center? what does the rev up motor do? more HP?

The warranty is fully transferable unlike those from Hyundai and Chrysler (Power train wise ). They have to give good reason the part broke because of negligence to perform maintenance to void a warranty claim. As long as the car has some service records you should be ok, or you can just take it to the infiniti dealer for service for a while to build up a record with them.

The rev-up motor has a higher redline and the torque and HP curves are a little different. All 05-06 MTs have this motor. There have been some oil burning problems with the non-revups as well, but those seem to be very rare.

well i mean of course, there is always a few engines in every production line that burn a lil oil but from what i understand it is pretty severe on the 05-06

The rev-up motors have more hp and less torque than the non revup motors. They have a higher redline, and were also more prone to the oil consumption issues than the non rev-up motors. The rev-up motors were found on the 2005-2007 G35 6mt models, the 2004 and 2003 model cars did not have the rev-up motor. I wouldn't let a single determining factor sway your decision, I'd take into account the whole picture. I got a 2004 coupe 2 years ago and got a great deal, only real problem thus far was my power door locks went out on the passenger side, this was covered under warranty though. There are a few changes between each model which you can take into account, depending on your price range and willingness to wait.
