Get a 08 G35x for nearly $4000 under invoice or 09 for $500 over invoice?

Hello all, hoping to get a few opinions to assist me in making a rather important decision.

Basically I am buying my first new car ever and am looking at a G3Xx with the Premium, Nav and Sport packages. My local dealer has 2008 G35x in either LP, PG or BS with those packages and I was offered $37,517 with .9% or $3000 off that without special financing.

For an equivalent 09 that he has coming in whatever color I so desire, he accepted my offer of $500 over invoice which makes it $39,387 and then the option of an extra $1000 off or 4.9% for 48-60 months.

When it's all said and done after $4500 down payment and a lot of calculating I'll end up paying about $5500 more for the 09 than the exact spec'd 08.

Any thoughts? I do like the bigger engine/faster transmission and self-healing clearcoat and figure since they've actually changed the model name from G35 to G37 the G37 will be more highly sought after 5-6 years down the road and thus giving it a slightly better depreciation and perhaps worth the premium.

just to give you an idea

Just so you have numbers to play with, here is the deal I just got on my G35 Journey with sport, premium, spash and mats.

MSRP $37985, $6060 off, so I paid $31925.

This is a cash price so the special 0.9% financing is not available. They could not even beat the 4.85% APR I was getting (that was actually weird but oh well).

That's the deal I got in Texas, the dealer has a lot of 08 G35 Sedans on hand and they MUST sell them all before they get any 09s. Check your dealer's inventory and you might be able to get the deal you want.

Well, to put it in perspective, at resale time, a car that is 1 year older is typically worth about $2500 less. In other words, 5 years from now, the '09 will only be worth ~$2500 more than the '08. So there is no doubt in my mind you should take the '08 at $5500 less now.

Oh, and $3k in lieu of special financing is a no brainer. Financing at normal rates will not cost you $3k more than the 0.9% over the life of the loan.

What kind of rates are we talking when you say normal?

Using the invoice minus $4500 on the 08 brings it to $33017.

Using an APR calculator, .9% on that makes $562.96 per month for 60 months.

Taking $3000 off that would require a 4.7% or lower to make the monthly payments less than that.

Would I be able to get that kind of rate?

Hmmm... you may be right. Rates just ain't what they used to be. See what your credit union will offer you. You never know, because it was only 5 months ago that an Infiniti dealer got me 5.5% on a USED car.

I've checked at 5 of the local credit union's websites and the lowest most of them have for an 08/09 for 60 months is 4.5% which would make the payments just a bit lower so I'm going to shop around and see which of them will offer me that rate.

Any other thoughts regarding the 08 vs 09? I may start another thread in the G37 sedan section regarding the issue since its not completely involving the buying/financing side of things.

My credit union was offering 4.85% and when I told my Infiniti dealer they said they could not beat it. The best they could do was 4.87%. And that's on a brand new 08 G35 Sedan but I was getting a very good price, 32K instead of 38K MSRP. They said it was a cash price meaning they won't finance it at the promotional rates. What gets me is why they would pass up the opportunity to make a further 2000 in interest but I'm starting to think they need cash now! (They should call JG Wentworth ).

Keep in mind that half a percent difference in APR makes very little difference to your monthly payment. Mine ends up being $550/month over 66 months and the only downpayment I had to give was TT&L of $2230.

About the 08 vs 09 dilemna. Infiniti dealers are hurting right now to get rid of their 08 models. They have to sell them all before Infiniti will send them any 09 G37 Sedans. That's why they are giving such deep discounts like the 19% I got. The sales guy told me that and I don't think he should have, I turned down the first three offers he made. If you really want the extra 20 or so HP from the G37 then you already have your answer. The best time to buy is september/october and Xmas. If you want to make sure you get a good deal, that'll happen on the 08 unless you can wait till christmas and then maybe they will discount the 09 G37 Sedan. I could not wait, I had to get a car now but if you have time and you like to gamble a little, Xmas may be the time for you.

Ok, enough for now *rambling mode off*

Just what I wrote before:

"Well, to put it in perspective, at resale time, a car that is 1 year older is typically worth about $2500 less. In other words, 5 years from now, the '09 will only be worth ~$2500 more than the '08. So there is no doubt in my mind you should take the '08 at $5500 less now."

However, are we talking G37? That could make a difference.
I didn't realize the '09 G37X was even out yet.

Yeah the 09 G37 sedan will probably appreciate at more than 2500 over a similar 08 G35 model, that said it might be something like 3500 but no one can really accurately predict that now.

See that's what I was thinking since the 2009 is a G37 and not a G35 many people 4-5 years down the road looking for a G will be wanting their cutoff at the first year of the G37 model rather than dropping down into the G35 so I figured the G37 would not end up depreciating as much as, for example, the 08 in comparison to the 07 being so similar and both being G35's.

I am still sooooo torn in this decision and it will probably be aided this weekend when i take a trip down to the dealer I am buying from to see an 08 in my configuration in person. That may make me realize that the 09 isn't much of a leap over the 08 and be exactly what i wanted before i knew of the 09's upgrades.

LEASE THE 2008 FOR SURE!

You can just turn the car in at the end of the lease if the value is less than the residual. DO YOU KNOW WHAT $4000 under invoice does for a lease payment?

Bottom line is that cars are not worth owning anymore. Just lease the thing and let the dealer take the hit!

I believe you are calculating $$$ off MSRP not Invoice.

Nice deal you got. And yes he can definitely do better than 3000 off.

Titan, forget about the 3000 or 4000 off, you need to make a cash deal basically showing your dealer what great deal you can get elsewhere. Mine ended up 6000 off, from 38k to 32K, not quite as good as Gspot's deal but still pretty good in my book.

You should be able to do the same and get your car for under 32K, don't pay any more than that especially if it's an 08!!!
