Unhappy Buyers Remorse - (noobie G35 owner)

Hi,

So I recently bought a 05 G35 6MT Coupe with $56K miles on it.

Got it for $18,995 (which I thought was a good buy)

3 weeks after buying the car the clutch went out, and I wasn't driving the car hard (gear changes around 3K RPM)... but guess the previous owner decided to have some fun with the car before departing with it.

I have also had some other minor issues

1) my e-brake not holding the car on almost any incline
2) Driver side window sometimes doesn't work (motor going out?)

I guess at this point I am beginning to feel some buyers remorse. I love the look of the G35 and it meets all my needs... but I wonder if I just drew the short straw on this particular car and or if anyone else has had buyers remorse.

Seriously thinking of trading in the car...and leaving the Infiniti family... thoughts, opinions, suggestions?

Sucks to be me!

Those are just some issues you will have to deal with when buying used. It could have been a CPO and you still would have ran into the issues.

1. Clutch - take this as an opportunity to go aftermarket
2. Ebrake - possibly could be an adjustment
3. Driver side window - do a quick search on the forum, cheap and quick fix

All cars / makes / manufacturers have flaws - and if you are on the web, in a forum etc... you will find these issues all to easily, and at times it will make you think you have an issue that you don't (like you read about it, then go looking for it)

I am sure many will agree, that the G is one of those cars with a lower then average listing of issues.

Trading it in = huge loss. You are much better fixing it, for the low cost(s) associated with each fix.

Good luck.

Good advice from Rated, I'd hate to see you take a big loss and miss out on a great car because of (relatively) minor issues.

Thanks for the advice Rated G and everyone else.

Yeah I know I would rather not trade the car in, and I know some things are just normal wear items...just wonder if it is my dumb luck with picking out a potential lemon.

I have always loved the look of this car. (and having owned a Boxster, Civic and Prelude), this car is the top choice (Sporty, Reliable??? (ie Japanese), and looks great in stock form)... but this car has also had the most issues after purchase. My Boxster was surprisingly pretty darn reliable.

The dealership said I can purchase an extended bumper 2 bumper warranty for up to 3 yrs / 100K of coverage (approx. = $1800 - $2500) and I am seriously considering it for some added peace of mind...

But just don't want to purchase this and get the run around from the dealership on the items that are NOT covered in the warranty.

Anyone ever had any bad experiences dealing with Dealerships and warranty work?

Peenutz...I had a similar situation when I bought my G last month from CarMax. When I first purchased the car and drove it off the lot my clutch stuck to the floor! If I hadn't read the forums here about having to pick up the clutch off the floor with your feet I would've looked really stupid coasting in 1st on the highway lol. Then to top it off...after only 4 days of having the car my clutch went off. Talking about cussing mad. And no I didn't race my car...I was to busy enjoying the comfort and luxury of the car to even think about that. So anyhow I take my car back to CarMax and they gave me a new(aftermarket clutch ) for free since it was under the 30 day warranty. I was still pissed because I had to drive a hyundai for 2 1/2 weeks until my car got repaired.(This occured during the Thanksgiving Holidays and the guy ordered the wrong parts and a bunch of other crap which made the repair process take forever!) But I wasn't pissed at Infiniti...I was mad at CarMax for not inspecting the car more carefully. The 'G' is of such superb quality that it would almost be silly to get rid of it dispite the issues that you have. I know you didn't buy a newer car just to have to do repairs to it but at the same time you're STILL getting a very reliable luxury car at a damn good price. I recently drove my 'G' back home to MS and the car drove like a dream. I had no aches or pains like I did when driving on long trips with previous cars and I had no issues passing other cars lol. Please don't sell your car...because you'll be taking a big "L".

The clutch and what not isn't covered under warranty. I have the warranty through CarMax and will probably get it through Infiniti to for good measure lol. I highly recommend doing so like you said..."for a peace of mind".

The problems you describe aren't uncommon, and aren't major. A little TLC and the G will give you years of reliable service and enjoyment.

Don't let a little string of bad luck make you doubt your decision - the things you've encountered could have happened to anyone with any car. Clutches are a common wear item on the car, the window motors are also a known issue. Do a little searching and reading here and you'll see that overall, minor quibbles aside, the G is a very nice entry level sport luxury car that really doesn't have that many bugs.

If you give it a little time, I'll bet she gives you miles and years of enjoyment. You've got to give her a little time to "become yours" is all.

Congrats on the purchase..

Good luck.
Just wait tell he finds out about the oil consumption issues on the 6mt rev-ups. The poor tread wear that Infinti refuses to recognize but Nissan has on the 350z.

Then, when he hits the 65k mark, he'll find out his # 6 spark plug gasket needs to be replaced. And since Infinti doesn't sell just the gasket, he will need to purchase the entire valve cover assembly. That will cost him a few hundred.

While on his way to the dealership, he decides to fill up on gas, and finds out that stupid gas tank won't let him fill it up all the way. LOL

Every car has issues. But I have never owned a car that has this many (little) issue. Issues that cost you a few hundred every 10-15k miles. (tires)

Especially for being a luxury brand. It shouldn't have all these little minor issues.

^ why buy stock tires if they don't perform well? All of these problems are known on the forum, therefore you can take precautions to prevent them from happening when out of warranty, or find used parts so that you won't be paying much. I know my car has had 0 *knock on wood* problems so far besides a faulty airbag sensor that was replaced under warranty and the shocks wearing out (but that's to be expected at 58k miles lowered on springs)

Tires aren't the problem.. It's the car... Uneven tire wear, (cupping, feathering) = car alignment problem. Not tires.

Car has been aligned to factory specs and all wheels are properly balanced by the dealership...

A class action suit has already been filed against Nissan for this problem.

Yeah I am currently running through the Oil Consumption test right now with the dealership. And so far the car is holding the oil...but I have also been "babying" the car.

Guess I should drive the car a little harder, as I don't want this problem to spring up before the Powertrain is expired. Wonder why Infiniti can't identify this problem based on the serial numbers on the engine block.

JibberJabber > Its the unforeseen little issues that I'm getting worried about... I need to spend more time researching potential issues.

Well, nothing out of the ordinary.
Clutches are wear and tear items and its not uncommon for a clutch to go at 60k especially if the previous owner drove it hard. Doesn't mean the car is a lemon because of a wear and tear item.

E-Brake - Again, totally normal. My E-Brake does that all the time and usually is caused by the user engaging it too tightly where the cable starts to stretch etc... Just a simple adjustment is all that is necessary.

Windows - Join the club. My car has 60k on it and both passenger side windows don't work. I'll probably look at them when it gets warmer out. Window motor problems are VERY common in G35s.
