Altima vs G35
The 2.5 Altimas have been prone to many problems. My brother works for Nissan in Service and what you stated has been a known problem. Now, the 09 2.5 Altimas are having problems with the head gaskets. He's had to warrany 2 engines already on cars with less than 10k miles on them.
My advice, ditch the Altima for a G35 or get a new Altima with the 3.5, or even still, get a used 2006 SE-R 6 speed.

Only available in CVT now.... that's the only reason I'd go with an earlier model. Faster is debatable.
Those 3.5 Altimas MOVE. I was trying to get my mom to go for a 3.5 SE but my dad wanted the cheapest one. Lame.
I test drove a 3.5 SE fully loaded up here in Fargo and man, that thing ripped. I definitiley think it would give my G a run out on the freeway, CVT or not, that thing was fast.

thats lame, but you could get a certified 07-09 with a 6 speed and they are faster then the se-r, they trap around 100-101 stock, se-r was more like 98-99ish
my 2003 se-r ate its precat around 40,000 miles, most of my friend's with spec v's had it happen sooner then that, didnt really seem to happen to 04+ models much.
on the other hand when i bought my G with 67000 miles it was burning a good bit of oil and it needed a new motor too...maybe nissan just can't make piston rings anymore.
then again my rsx-s burnt a good bit of oil for the 70,000 miles i had it, as did my celica GT-S but I feel like with those cars it had more to do with the fact that they saw 8000+ rpms daily

i think when the mexicans made the precat's some came with pin holes in them from the factory(at least thats what the tech who replaced my QR25 said) and over time they would fall apart and instead of being shot out the back of the exhaust they would hang out in between the exhaust manifold and secondary cat until eventually they engine would suck the pieces in and score the cylinder walls causing an alarming rate of oil consumption(like a quart every couple hundred miles, not like this quart every 1000-2000 mile stuff that the people on here complain about).
supposedly the more abusive you are the faster you will ruin the motor, thats why the spec v guys would blow up around 20-40k and the altimas are lasting until 100k(which is worse because the warranty is over and you are SOLol)

i didnt think id want another nissan product after my sentra but the G seemed like a more relaxing car then my rsx so i got it and it need a new engine too so idk if I will be giving nissan any more chances.. unfortunatly the car companies I would rather buy from (honda and toyota) seem to have an aversion to manual transmissions in rwd or awd cars. so im left with subaru, audi and bmw

Going from an 08 model with 30k to an 06 with 50+k brings into question the long term maintenance costs. Also I may be wrong, but I don't think Nissan offers the ability to purchase extended warranty coverage for any models over 3 yrs / 36k miles.

I have a 2008 Altima 2.5SL. Rides great, but straight line acceleration is lacking along with some questions I have about build quality. Anyone here go from an Altima to a G. I have thought about going with a used g35x, but only if I didn't have to finance any more money. My car is warrantied till jan 2015 or 100k miles, whichever comes first. CVT warranty up to 2018/120k mi. I have 29k on the odometer right now. The back end has been making a creaking noise and I for the life of me can't figure out what it is. Cabin noise is a bit high, but some sound deadening in the doors and rear deck may fix that.
The mileage I've been getting with the QR is sometimes impressive, sometimes not. For a 4cyl I can get around 32mpg hwy but I really need to keep it at 55 for that and pump up tire pressure. With my spirited driving it averages more around 23mpg. I want something that will last and bought my car brand new. With my finances I kinda think I should ride it out till she has high miles and then sell it for something else.

Somewhat similar situation
Not to hijack your thread, but I'm in a somewhat similar situation. I'm debating between an '08 Altima 2.5 SL with 22,000 miles that I can get for ~$14k, or an '06 G35x with 35,000 miles that I can get for ~$17k.
It would seem the G is a no brainer, but I just can't shake the 2 year difference, although not a ton different in mileage. I drive a lot (20k+ miles per year), so the gas mileage is a slight concern, as is tire wear - which I have been reading is a problem in the G35. Not really looking forward to replacing tires every year or so.
Decisions, decisions!
