Red face Desperate but scared

Hey guys I've wanted to buy a g35 coupe 6MT for a long time, now i'm actually getting one frm my savings..........
I'm talking to one guy with 2003 coupe 6MT, 110K miles in Daytona, Florida with aero package(without Navi). He's asking $9800.....

I have read through this forum extensively, and found out these problems to look for..

1. Engine oil consumption
2. Faulty Window switches, motor, Door Lock actuator, power seat, Bose CD player
3. Cruise control
4. oil leak in spark plug chamber
Plz add anything i'm missing here

Here are few questions of mine...
  1. Of all these i'm worried more about the oil consumption and the oil leak in spark plug chamber........ considering mine is a 2003 6MT coupe and not a rev up engine........ what are my chances of having those problems in tht car....... what should i look for in the car?

  2. Generally after how many miles does the wheel bearings go bad( he has stock wheels on them)
  3. The owner said tht previous owner had the clutch done at arnd 85K miles..... and he doesn't have the receipt for that...... I know when the clutch is bad the shifts wudn't b smooth and need more effort but how do i check for the slight slips in the clutch, as in wht xactly happens when clutch slips( what are the symptoms?)...... Also it's female driven i'm scared of the clutch and m yet to drive it.
  4. It has brembo's how do i look for any symptoms on that.

I also need ur advices on the fairness of the asking price($9800), considering he has done the plugs, changed the belts, good tires, fluid changes.

Also it will be of great help if u guys can tell, if there are any more things i need to look for....
Comments and Suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe it's just me and I'm paranoid, but a car with a clutch that's been replaced at 85K (w/o evidence), and with Brembos, suggests that it's been pushed. It might not have been and I could be very wrong as this might be normal for the MT's (I drive the sedan), but I would certainly take it to a trusted mechanic and have them look at all of this-- Were belts changed? Is there any oil on the plugs? What is the compression in each chamber? Suspension squeaks, especially the compression rods which can be torn and still lubed to hide the sounds? Acceleration? Are new tires hiding a possible alignment issue? etc.). It will be a well spent $50-75!

Are there receipts for past fluid/belt changes and other repairs? Is there a history report?

The fact that you're asking us about these issues may make you a perfect target for an unscrupulous salesperson--- but then again I might just be a bit paranoid.

Good luck and I know others will have much more to add.

hahah i love the part where OP says the clutch has been replaced but its female driven thats classic

If the clutch is slipping when you shift your rpms will rocket like ur revving the car but you will not go anywhere....easy way to tell is to go into gear then almost floor it and it should pick up right away

every car has issues.....wheel bearing is there a reason your asking? Did the owner mention something you seem iffy and your mentioning brakes like it has a sound in it

Thanks for the feedback every one. I'm yet to see the car, i just saw the pics.... I asked those questions just so that I know what all to look for when i actually test drive it.......

In the mean while i also saw another 2003 coupe 6MT with 73,000 miles, single owner and navigation, for $9500...... it's owned by a company and was driven by one of its executive.....and the company is selling it.

Cons: The driver window motor is giving up, the stereo doesn't work and there are few scratches on the car..... they said it has been through all the routine maintenance's......... I'm yet to see the car.

How does this deal look to you guys??? I think it's a STEAL!

Thanks so much guys

Try to avoid cars that have a lot of problems. My cousins friend bought a G35 that looked decent on the outside but the engine had a tiny crack in it that got worse like a month into his ownership. Eventually, the car pretty much had to be towed to the dealership. He had to pay thousands to clean up the engine at the dealership.

The price was really low for a G35 and he thought it was a steal, but he ended up paying a lot more fixing the problems.

It might seem like a steal at the moment, but think of how it will be in the long run.

That could be one of the possibility, i even thought about it...... but i ruled it out cos, it was a chemical companies car which the company gave to one of the executives to drive....... and as a company owned car it has to go through all the original maintenance( cos as a company they try to avoid hassle for going cheap, instead save time and go to dealer)....... and the other reason why it is cheap cos it's not an individual selling the car....... but the companies representative selling it for the company........... so it's so much less likely to be fishy........... atleast i hope so

But thanks guys......... i'm waiting for as many feedbacks from u guys as possible before i hop on my G....

Well as long as you're 100% sure the car is in excellent running condition, I say go for it. Any G35 below 12k these days is a bargain (clean title).

If you decide to get the company one. Just swap out the stereo with a double din, and to solve the scratches. Get a custom paint job. =)

FYI all 2003 & 2004 6MT G35 Coupes come with Brembos from the factory. It does not suggest that the car has been pushed at all.

Also regarding the oil consumption issue, it is most common on the rev-up motor and the earlier model normal VQ35 non rev-up are not affected (at least not nearly as much, I'm sure there are some that consume oil).

I'd say buy the car.

I dont think that the clutch being replaced means it was pushed hard,

there are a lot of people that dont know how to drive a stick, I still get in to peoples cars and they are such noobs( no offense to you guys that still drive like that)

but there is no reason to need to rev up to 2k to move from a stop, an average person should be able to do it at 1k or less, and pros right at idol.

Also Ive seen people ride the clutch in between gears too, which is ridiculous, i have seen clutched that been replaced to on cars at 45k, but only because they sucked at driving stick, not because the beat it.

Thanks for the info guys...

Is grinding in gears a common or imminent issue on the G's??, I have read about those too...... generally after how many miles do they kick in....... Your personal experiences would help a lot........
I want to upgrade from A4 2.8 quattro 5 speed, it shifts like a dream...... and it would be really annoying if i come across grinding down the lane on my G( I still remember my Celica GTS )

Thanks Guys.
