Possible New Owner Questions

Hello everyone! I've been lurking on the site the past couple days trying to absorb as much information as I can. Can't believe I never realized how beautiful these cars truly are, I suppose no one in my area cares to tastefully mod them. G35Papa, your car is an inspiration haha.

Anywho, I may be a future owner of a G35. Currently am looking at a 2006 Sedan 6speed with 87k miles on it. I am not too worried about this because I have read many forum members well over 100k and even into the late 200's (highest I've seen is 273k). This lets me know that as long as these vehicles are maintained they will last. However one thing that is not discussed when discussing higher mileage is how the cars are driven. Now I don't necessarily have a led foot, but when owning a car such as this I do enjoy some time in the twisties and this will include getting close to redline. I have never owned a used car before with this many miles, well not one that is geared mildly towards performance at least, so I'm curious how you guys feel about spirited driving in higher mileage G35's? Since the car is used and I will be unsure as to how it was broken in etc. are there specific tests I should put it through to show if it can handle my abuse? Also I am planning on keeping this car close to 200k miles. It's gotta last me until I can afford a new one haha.

This is my main concern for now, if I do end up picking it up there will be many more questions in regards to mods; currently I am browsing the "What mods should I buy..." thread.

Thanks guys and gals!

2005-2006 6mt sedan = rev-up series engine which have piston rings that tend to let oil slip through and valve guide seals that just don't seal that great. You will want to pull a history of the vehicle from infiniti to see if any oil consumption testing was done on the motor. They tend to run dry on oil if you do not keep an eye on the oil levels which are a pain to check if you are a noob. If you want to do spirited driving get some springs/shocks or coil overs. Change out your sway bar and endlinks along with compression rod bushings. Get camber kit to bring suspension back into spec and a nice set of tires.

I had a feeling it was the rev-up series; I have heard about their oil consumption. Are there any things that can be done to prevent this oil loss? I have no problem with checking oil every few fill ups; but I also don't want to have to buy a quart every time I go to the pump haha.

Already looking at spring/strut combos. Springs are the first thing I will change, and then adding sways. If I can find a good enough deal on shocks and springs I will do them with the sways. I won't have a ridiculous amount of money to mod so most of this will be modding on a budget. I believe I saw a thread where someone was intending to mod their G as it should have been from the factory. That will be my approach. Also I have read that even when doing the G/Z spring swap you will need to upgrade your struts; is this the case with the sport suspension on the Sedan 6MT?

Since it is sport suspension from a 6mt package you will be fine with just swapping in springs from 350z/G35 coupe. I would use that as a temporary setup to get you buy until you have money for springs/shock which have dampening adjustment or a set of quality coil overs. You will be able to dial the suspension back in if you just go with .75" of a drop but any more than that typically involves additional parts to bring toe/camber back in spec.

You can't do anything about oil consumption besides rebuilding the motor and using an oversize piston along with machine the block. You can replace valve guide seals at that time and freshen up the motor with what ever parts you desire. The temporary solution is to check your pcv and make sure it is not clogged and do your oil changes at 3000 miles and check oil after your vehicle has been sitting on a flat surface overnight to let oil settle. You can choose a thick oil in 30 weight like german castrol but that stuff is expensive your car drinks it. Stick with conventional oil every 2500-3000 miles and you should only burn upto 1 quart on average. Also check your valve cover if they have leaks by replacing your spark plugs and inspecting each cylinder for oil leak.

Awesome, glad to hear I can just swap G/Z springs onto these struts. That will do me well until I can get coilovers. Well at least it's not like an Rx-8 lmao. So you're saying to check the valve cover etc. while replacing the spark plugs to see if there are any leaks? I suppose this is something a mechanic could be asked to do when getting the okay on the car. I have no problem maintaining my own vehicles but when purchasing something like this I rely on the advice of someone whose profession it is to give; my degree is in something else haha.

But your recommend checking the oil after the car has sat on a flat surface over night? Rather than checking it every couple fill ups at the pump? Does the dipstick itself give a good indication as to how much oil to add? I hear some people check and add a quart, is this a guesstimation or can you get an idea as to how much it needs by the dipstick?

Thanks for your knowledge and advice faiz!

EDIT: After reading this thread TSB on RevUp oil consumption I must admit I'm a little worried. I can't seem to see if this would cover the car I would be purchasing? How big of a deal was this? I.E. something that would certainly decrease the amount of miles I'll get out of my motor (~200k). Also do these revup motors consume more gas than the normal ones? I assume 04 Coupes with Brembos are rev ups as well? I'm surrounded by RevUps here lmao.

I mean are these engines something I should stay away from? I heard they are supposed to have less torque but I saw a post of someones specs from the dealer and it read 260tq; the same as I hear the standard engines have. I'm just wondering if I'm being paranoid about this.

Welp, that one was wrecked and fixed 3 times by the same woman in one year, then repo'd. Wonderful...

The search continues... *sigh* this is nearly impossible in the southeast

When buying ANY used car, you want to see the full maintenance record. If the owner cannot produce it, you walk. The maintenance record speaks for itself. Are the oil and filter changed regularly, air filter too. Cabin filter changed regularly? At 87K, belts should have been changed, tranny fluid changed, radiator flushed, tranfer case oil changed, differential fluid changed. Brake pads changed regularly, how about the rotors? Drive over 60 miles and step on the brake a little hard, any shimmy in the steering wheel? Brake paddle pulsates? These indicates bad rotors front and back respectively. Make sure you don't hear squeaky noise under the car when going over speed bump, which indicated suspension parts are gone. Do the tire wear evenly? These are just the basic things you need to look out for.

If you live in the bay area hook up with G35Papa (chris) maybe he knows someone with the exact car you're looking for. Buying a car from the dealership/private party you always need to check the history, maintenance records are a definate plus. Not everyone keeps records of when oil changes are done, I drive 5K miles a year and change my AMSOIL synthetic/WIX filter 3 times a year. My friends shop where I do my oil changes says, "He'd like to save my oil and put it in his car!"
Good Luck finding the G sedan you're looking for, it's out there....Gary

I'm actually in Georgia.

Seems impossible currently to find G35's in manual and when I do they have ~100-110k miles on them already... The amount of miles I have heard these engines are capable of going has certainly drawn me to them, but still I think anyone is weary of buying a car with 100k miles. I've even expanded the search to coupes just to make sure I am able to get the car I want at the mileage I need.

I am a coupe owner and I'll agree there arent many out there in great shape under 100k miles. Mine is for sale at 132k and is a manual. Its easy to get scared of the mileage on a car, its understandable, but if you have someone that keeps records of oil changes/checkups/any other maintenance as well as a clean report they'll run forever. If you're looking for a manual trans def. test drive it to its fullest. If the clutch is shot you'll either get a lot of grinding or it will slip out of gear near redline. Ive had mine for 4 years and love it, both me and the guy before me babied the heck out of it the only reason I'm getting rid of is is because I upgraded and am looking to purchase a house, but i'm in the same boat. Everyone gets scared of cars over 100k
