Buying Used G35 6MT Coupe Advice- Oil Consumption
Buying Used G35 6MT Coupe Advice- Oil Consumption
Hey Guys,
I apologize for bringing up an issue that as already been discussed, but I have not been able to reach a definitive conclusion. I am in the market for a used G35 6MT coupe and am deciding between the 2004 and 2005 model year with around 70k miles. I have done quite a bit of research into the oil consumption issue that seems to plague the 2005 year, but cannot decide whether this should be a deal breaker or not. I am wondering how to determine if the used vehicle suffers from this since it will be out of warranty and if there are any other major concerns with either of these years? Also, does anyone know of a source that declares the actual number of cars affected, I could not seem to find one, and wanted to see how common of an issue this really is.
Thank you for your help

It's a hit and miss issue. Maybe you can locate some service records. I would go for the 2005 because of the upgraded interior and wheels with the 6mt. Of course our power windows and locks tend to have issues. Other issues may include bad bose head unit, compression rod bushings, worn out seat cushions, and chipping paint. Overall not really any major issues.
I bought an 05 knowing I could be plagued. Unfortunately I was, but honestly if you keep up with it and see how much your burning you should have no issue, I add a quart every thousand miles. Not that big of a deal..
Thanks for the advice and warnings. I guess there really isn't a way to know for sure if your buying a used out of warranty car. Would a compression test be helpful to test for any leaks or since its oil burning wouldn't show up?
I would be fine keeping a steady watch on the oil but am worried about longer term issues with the engine if they problem was bad enough that Infiniti replaced the blocks. Is it just the fact that you need to be extra observant or are there long term consequences?

Dont do it, its 1/3 chance u will get a good one. You have Chronic consumption, sippers, and those that dont drink.
One thing you can do is ask the shop to let you look under it,and check the oil pan for a paint mark.

I wouldn't base my decision off of fancy brakes.

Sorry for the late response, one last question. If the G35 were to have the oil consumption issue, does it lead to long term issues with the engine or just requires a watchful eye on the oil level?
Just keep oil level full. It can cause long term issues if you drive it low on oil.
This doesn't have anything to do with oil consumption, but why not look at 06's with the updated headlights and tails? Unless of course the 04 an 05 is nearby and ther are no 06's close....
I guess it comes down to whatever I can find the best deal on. Not in a huge rush to buy, and am open to any year, whichever is the best deal. I've seen mainly 04 and 05 6mt in my area within my price range(12-14k optimally) but eventually the right 06 will come along too so that is definitely a good point

For what it's worth, I got my 06 6mt coupe with just over 70k for $16,000, so definitely keep an eye out. It may be a bit out of your price range now, but you said yourself you aren't in a hurry. Maybe by the time you find it, it will be more in your price range.
I got my 06 6MT with black interior for $12000 with 85000 miles. Sadly it burns oils and I had to change the clutch at 90000
