Just walked away from a deal on an '05...
I just walked out of the dealership and walked away from the deal.
The car in question: 2005 G35 coupe auto black on black w/19" rims, Bose sound system, sunroof, no navi, no aero. Sticker was 37700. Last '05 on lot.
Trade in: 2003 Maxima SE auto, sunroof, all else is standard w/17" stock rims 80K mi needs rear tires and a fog lamp.
I got approved and qualified at 6.5% for 60 mos.. They came at me at first and only offered 9500 trade for my Max. I immediately told them it was a deal breaker. Then they came up to 11000 trade w/36000 purchase price. I told them no dice. Finally when they saw I was going to leave they came to 13,700 w/36000 purchase price.
The payoff on the Max is ~15400 so 13700 puts me 1700 upside down. I expected around 1200 but the car needs a two tires and the fog lamp so no big deal.
I talked prices and interest rates and not payments. They quoted payments of 810-815 including TT&L for 60 months. They said it wasn't getting any sweeter and then the salesperson and I walked outside for a smoke. He was cool but I could tell he was stressin. I stayed outside for a few minutes had another smoke and made a few phone calls.
I decided to walk. I could get the car financed on a 72mo. from the credit union at about the same interest rate and save on monthly payments.
So in the end I walked, am I crazy or smart?

The car dealership should have been able to offer you the 72 month term as well. Seeing that you were only upside down 1700 you were getting a good deal on your trade but the price on the G35 is a bit high. Especially with 06's out.
Back in May I got G35 for 34518 which the MSRP is 37200, so you could've gotting the car lot cheaper than 36000, But the sticking point is your trade-in with its high mileage, from blue book the trade-in vaule is only 8525 comapared to if you only have 20k miles, its at 13k, but they offer you 13700 for it, so acutlly it dont sound like bad deal at all.
And the payment of 810~815 with 6.5% for 60mos, the amount financed is around 41500... so if you gotting the car for 36K plus 1.7k for your trade, its at 37.7k plus say 10% for tax and license fees, it end up to 41470
...the problem with this deal is your trade-in.

i dont know about how much miles you have on maxima but that price is really low...i have 02 maxima SE w/ about 60k miles
i had better offer than that lol
why is the % seems so high...?
i think the dealer is trying to rip you off really bad.
forget about that dealer and try other one. let us know how it goes
additionally tho, i have more packages and i got it in april(no trade in)
FYI, i got mine in april. 05 coupe AT everything minus nav, front lip, and xm radio -> 39g OTD (48 months 391 dollars everymonth 5.4% i think)

you should be able to easily get an '05 now for invoice. if any dealership wants more, i would laugh in their face. so, the price you were quoted seems high. also, the interest rates seems high too.....but, of course, that depends on your credit.
once again, your mistake was talking trade-in right off the bat. you should have negotiated the price of the car first (down to invoice). and then introduced the trade-in into the equation. also, NEVER negotiate in terms of monthly payments because they can always lower the monthly payments by increasing the length of the loan which only makes you pay more in interest during the life of the loan.

My take on this is how 'up' are you on your payments for the Maxima. If your loan balance isn't keeping up with the value of the car, then you "fall behind." If that were the case, I wouldn't expect the trade value to actually pay off the loan.....this is a rare case if it were to happen, due to people making the minimum payments per month. I feel your pain though, by thinking they're trying to get over...because they probably are. I've come to terms to think if I trade in a car, I won't expect them to offer what I'd actually want. In your case, I think it's funny that they came up $4200 for the trade.....wow.
Good luck with whatever you follow up on and do. I'm trying to close in on my deal for '06.

From this experience I have learned that trading in a vehicle is not fun. I really am starting to think it was a fair deal though.
I feel your pain. Nothing against dealerships...but the experience is just overwhelming. I'm glad I don't have to do this every day. Once every few years is good enough.
The trade-in game is tricky too. The key is RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH.
Know your prices and what you want when you walk in, and expect them to try to meet you in the middle...and adjust your price accordingly.
GOOD LUCK!

You had too many pieces in play at once, this is what the dealers love to do. It gives them many ways to disguise the bad deal. This is the 4 square game they like to play.
Padding yer trade in was just one way to disguise the ridiculous buy price. You need to look up invoice on that car, 1000-1500 below invoice is where you needed to be. From a quick look, it looks like you were about 4-5k off, thats a big difference. Even with near tmv price on yer trade in, thats a huge margin for the dealer.
Good thing you walked away.

You were in the wrong. I can't expect to get more than 10k at the most trade in on a car that was discontinued (bodystyle) and has 80k of miles!
So yea they were trying to help you, but you wouldn't except it. Sorry if your that far upside down, your better off selling it out right or keeping it.

The vehicle also has complete and verifiable service records. Less than 5% of all used vehicles fall into this category.
Trade-In Value List Your Car For Sale Online $9,400
Trade-in Value is what consumers can expect to receive from a dealer for a trade-in vehicle assuming an accurate appraisal of condition. This value will likely be less than the Private Party Value because the reselling dealer incurs the cost of safety inspections, reconditioning and other costs of doing business.

Should I really be looking to go $1000-$1500 below invoice?? That seems extremely low-ball.
