Bought car, now what (how to register, etc.)

OK, I reside in Virginia but bought the car in MD. I've got 60 day temporary MD tags and a Maryland Temporary Registration Certificate. The dealer collected the tax and all that jazz. Could someone give me some guidelines on what I need to do to title/register the car in Virginia? The dealer claimed I need to get the car inspected and then send the inspection back to them.

I hope that all makes sense and will be glad to provide any addition details needed.

Contact the dealer again and get step by step instructions.

Your gonna get so much contradictory advice before this thread is done, you'll be FUBAR'd.

Reciprocity

DC, MD, and VA have reciprocity agreements in place. No matter which juristiction in which you bought the vehicle, the dealer collects the approriate tax and fees for your state of residency (based upon a rebuttable presumption that you will register the vehicle in your domiciliary state). The state inspection requirement falls upon the purchaser (out of state deals), but you must provide the dealer with the appropriate certificate of inspection so he can forward all the required documentation to the VA Dept. of Motor Vehicles. The VA DMV will then create the title, record the lien (if any), and issue tags/registration. The tags/registration may be sent to your dealer or to you (via snail mail); it depends on the arrangement between the dealer and the involved DMV. Call the dealer and inquire.

You may not realize it, but you've probably paid for this sertvice under "Documentation Fee/Charge"; look on your bill of sale.
