I went with four Yokohama IG721 tires. The winter was pretty mild by Alberta standards but there were quite a few days with semi deep fresh and slushy snow. Most of my driving is on the highway and it all went without incident. I did not ever have an issue stopping (though I am very cautious in the winter time).
On dry roads there is a lot more noise and more flexing that the stock all seasons. They always felt safe though when driving normally.
Sometimes parking or starting to move while parked in deep slushy snow led to a little bit of spinning but with a little patience I was always able to get moviing. I did get semi stuck once in our driveway but there was lots of fresh snow on top of hard ice.
Like I said before, on the road where it matters, the tires worked perfectly. So much better than my stock all seasons that are starting to get pretty worn. Looking forward to next spring when I can find some good summer tires.
As far as tread wear is concerned, I used the tires for a good 4-5 months. Much of the time was on the dry roads. I looked at the tires the other day and they still look nearly new.
Some of pros and cons of popular models are discussed here:

I just finished the winter tire shopping and I end out with the hankook w409. It is a new one coming out this year I think. I know it is not best one but is only cost me 155+tax each. I have pretty good experence with the icebear in the last winter on my old car so I just give it try on my G. I just can not find icebear the 215/55/17 anywhere. For all of others I just feel it cost too much.
