Just wanna share:
My home got broken in today(Bathurst and Clarke)-they came in through basement window. Took cameras, LCD TV, couple of dormant credit cards and moms jewellery. Damage money wise is not that big, but feeling is not very good.
Anybody got tips on home security? I know that phone based security is crap-cut the phone line and you are good to go.
All input will be appreciated.

Thye have cellular based alarm systems. Also most burglars cut the phone line at the phone box on hte side of your residence. Solution, alarm the box so the call goes out before the line is cut.

sorry about that and just be more careful, people in these days are wild. They will do anything for fast money. the good thing is...no one gets hurt.
someone broke into my house last year, took alot of stuff. My mom almost encounter them.
My aunt's house got broke in last week, clear the whole house. From money, car keys, to collector stamps. My cousin's house got broke in yesterday, good thing they didn't have much valuable in the house.

I agree with guard dogs... they work in two ways; guarding your home and being your best friend.
Wow, sorry to hear about that. I have never been unfortunate enough to have had my place broken into, but I can only imagine how p!ssed I would be. Such an invasion of privacy.
Last year, I installed an X10 Home Security system in my house. Every single window and door has wireless sensors installed. Anytime one of the sensors is tripped, it is programed to call my cellular, my office, and the police. It also flashes lights in my house and a piercing siren goes off. It is easy to install, is inexpensive, and it works great. It even brought down the price of my home insurance policy. Here is some info on it if you are interested.

You know honestly the dog idea is the best> No matter what kind of dog it is it is a huge deterent. Just make sure that it isnt a poodle or something and you will be alright. You can have a mutt but if he sounds mad they wont fu$k with your house again.
The only thing is if they really want to get to you you have to have a way to protect yourself. I dont know what the gun laws are like there but I am always in favor or gun ownership for this very reason.

My idea was something like motion detectors, image(face) recognition system and automatic machine guns at every entry point of the house

Alarmforce and other Canadian companies have one problem. The reponse times!
By the time the burglars enter and leave, the reponse units are in most cases too late to reach your home.
I remember reading about this in a news article and it makes sense.
Usually break and enters are tip offs. They have enough information to get what they want so they can leave quickly. You had someone inside to do some work, housemaid, etc...?
Also, there is a product out there that is a laminate you put on the glass. It will protect the window from being broken into. It's excellent and works. They use this now in many industrial buildings for those ****** and run type of thefts.
I'm not sure home alarm systems are worth it anymore.

I believe it is a random hit. Police said they recognized the pattern and it is 12th occurence in neighbourhood within last 2 weeks.Someone's got a full time job.
It could be stigma of Jewish(rich!) neighbourhood, but I could only laugh at them taking Magnasonic $39.99 DVD player. There's virtually nothing to steal in my house. My family just doesn't care about jewellery, artworks and antiquities.
Intrusion in my private space is what pisses me off.

Sorry to hear about the break in. I've had one years ago, but the guy was after documents.
Since then (and a lot of other things too) I've been super paranoid about security. If guns were allowed, I'd have one, and would go through the training to use it.
I don't have any practical ideas on how to stop a break-in, or deal with one, even though I think about it all the time (there's that paranoia again). Yeah, a huge dog might do it, but that's not very practical.
GTA is slowly turning into a scum bucket. Sigh...

That totally sucks obender66. It's like you were violated.
I still don't lock my doors most of the time, but I live in a town of 6,000. I also have a dog , a German Shepard/Lab mix, but she is getting on in years. Quite a few years ago my dog was growling in the middle of the night. She sleeps on a mat beside our bed. I looked out the bedroom window and there was a guy standing there, I yelled out at him. I ran to the side door and let the dog out and she ran to the exact spot he was standing in, then ran to our lot line barking. I think that guy might of had to change his drawers later. If we have workers come to do something in our home, that dog always stands between my wife and the worker if I'm not there.
I think a dog is the best thing to have. If you have a good dog they will do anything to protect you and all they want in return is a bit of love and affection.
I have always had a dog as a child and will always have one.
