Red face Another winter tire thread....

Hey fellas,

I know we've had a number of these threads, but I need some detailed help.

I was just about ready to get my rims/tires combo when I read some posts discussing "VDC system" and "staggered setup". Can anyone shed some light on these terms for me?

I also would like to know if I need to have wider winter tires in the back or if I can have all 4 the same dimensions. (from what I have read, I can either go 225/50/17 front and 235/50/17 back or the 225 front and back...)

And I've read that some people have been getting alluminum rims for the same/close price as steelies. Where is the best place to go?

Thanks,

Troy

I ran 225/50/17 on all 4 corners of my coupe, but I understand that you can stagger them with the 235's in the rear for a better settup.

I do know that the 225/50/17 settup worked well on mine.

Troy, I would run them as Colin did, same size front and rear. That way you can rotate them each year. It is better in snow to stay on the narrow side, not to go wider, just try to stay the same outside diameter.

Thanks guys, I got the same advise from Jerry (QRAFTWERKZ). I'm going to call him this week and get my baby ready for a long winter.

I figured out what a staggered setup is, but I still don't know what a VDC system is...anyone?

Oh yeah, sorry Troy, I forgot that part.

Vehicle Dynamic Control system.

From the owner's manual:

"When accelerating or driving on a slippery surface, the tires may spin or slide. With VDC systems, sensors detect these movements and control the braking and engine output to help improve vehicle stability".

"When the VDC is operating, the instrument panel 'Slip' light blinks".

Troy, for this system to function properly, you have to maintain the proper diameter of the wheel/tire combo , or at least be within about 3-4%.

Jerry is a great guy and will fix you up with excellent tires at an excellent price.

To double check OEM tire diameters and the corresponding replacements, check here at this site to make the necessary calculations:

Thanks for the reply Colin.

So if I get 225/50/17 tire dimensions on all 4 corners, this VDC system will not function properly, correct? Judging by your first post, it seems to me that this system is not very important. Am I wrong?

Also, yes, I am very pleased with Jerry's help (and patience ). His price seems excellent to me!!!

It will function properly......and yes the VDC is very important and must be considered when replacing tires/wheels for it to function properly.

Take a look at the tire calculator and comparator site I posted previously to make sure diameters are within 3-4%.......and you should be fine.

When you talk to Jerry, say hi for me.

I looked around the net and found that the stock specs for an 06 sport coupe are 225/40/19 front and 245/40/19 rear. I'm right, right?

And the winter tire/rim combo I wanna get is 225/50/17 on all 4 corners.

Using the Tire Calculator And Comparator (http://www.canadiandriver.com/tools/...c/tirecalc.htm) I got 0.9% difference up front and 3.2% in the rear. Is this acceptable?

Troy looking at your specs and plugging in numbers , if it were mine I would go with 225/55R17 tires all around. Your speedo will be almost dead on (within 0.1%).

Thanks for the input Wayne!
Hmm, so is it more important for the rear specs to have less variation than the front? With your suggestion, the front tire difference will be 2.5%.
