OK all you Philadelphia lawyers....

I know the issue of front plates has been discussed *several* times b4.... BUT;

For obvious reasons , this is a hot topic for me again.
I followed a link from the MTO site to the highway traffic act (Ontario)

LINKY

I can't find anything there that says a front plate is required
Anyone else care to try....

Violations as to number plates

12. (1) Every person who,

(d) uses or permits the use of a number plate upon a vehicle other than a number plate authorized for use on that vehicle;
(e) uses or permits the use of evidence of validation upon a number plate displayed on a motor vehicle other than evidence of validation furnished by the Ministry in respect of that motor vehicle; or
(f) uses or permits the use of a number plate or evidence of validation other than in accordance with this Act and the regulations,

is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $1,000 or to imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or to both, and in addition the person’s licence or permit may be suspended for not more than six months. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 12 (1).

There's nothing in that section that specifically says you need a back plate either, it only speaks to alteration or substitution. Requirements for the display of plates must be in a different section.

I think this is the kicker:
__________________________________________________ ___________
Permit requirements
7. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless,
(a) there exists a currently validated permit for the vehicle;
(b) there are displayed on the vehicle, in the prescribed manner,
(i) number plates issued in accordance with the regulations showing the number of the permit issued for the vehicle, or
(ii) number plates described in subsection (7.2) if the vehicle is an historic vehicle and the Ministry has issued a currently validated permit for it; and
(c) evidence of the current validation of the permit is affixed, in the prescribed manner, to,
(i) one of the number plates mentioned in subclause (b) (i) displayed on the vehicle, or
(ii) to a mini-plate attached to the number plate exposed on the rear of the vehicle, if number plates described in subsection (7.2) are displayed on the vehicle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 7 (1); 2000, c. 29, s. 1 (1).
__________________________________________________ _______________

Basically it says in (b)(i) - you have to display the plate(s) they give you; and in (c)(i) - you have to have a validation sticker on one of them.

But, then again, I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. If there is a way out of using a front plate I'd love to hear from a real shyster, I mean lawyer.

I guess the kicker is ..
what is the "prescribed manner"?
It doesn't seem to be defined.

^ that's exactly what I had found before I bothered to read the replies to your thread. D*** that was like a scavenger hunt. LOL

Yeah I wonder about the prescribed manner legislation too?? Maybe you can set a mailing address here and the register it in NS!

Edit: This might have relevance to the prescribed regs. Need to find the bolded section.

Regulations re permits and number plates

(24) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations respecting any matter ancillary to the provisions of this Part with respect to permits and number plates and in particular,
(o) prescribing the criteria for the issuance, retention and return of a number plate bearing a requested number. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 7 (24); 1994, c. 27, s. 138 (5).

Just got this from someone else..

The word "prescribed" means prescribed by the Regulations.

So looking at the Regs, here you go (s. 9(3) of R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 628):

Number Plates

9. (1) Evidence of validation issued for use on a number plate shall be affixed,

(a) where the permit is for a commercial motor vehicle, in the upper right corner of the number plate exposed on the front of the motor vehicle; and

(b) in all other cases, in the upper right corner of the number plate exposed on the rear of the motor vehicle. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 628, s. 9 (1).

(2) Despite subsection (1), a RUO sticker shall be affixed in the upper left corner of the number plate exposed on the front of the bus. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 628, s. 9 (2).

(3) The number plates for a motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle or a motor assisted bicycle, shall be attached to and exposed in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the motor vehicle. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 628, s. 9 (3).
