Bad weather

Oh boy, I would have never imagined how I was doing like 10~20km/hr all the way in DVP North this morning.

On the other hand, there was quite a few scenaries where I first saw a 07 G which IMO looks stunning + seeing quite a number of Civic buddies running on Summer tires... sliding around

Ouch, thats too bad Manbir, hopefully there is no mechanical damage to the Honduh. Glad you are okay.
It's nice to hear that there still are people around that are willing to lend a helping hand to others. Nowadays, most of the people seem like they are in too much of a hurry to help anyone.

Glad that you met some good Samiritans that helped you out. You should get your car checked out asap just in case if any hydrualic lines or anything might have get punctured... Better to be safe

do snow tires work on icy road?

Man we had it bad yesterday morning here in GTA - frozen rain. It was my first time drive the G in weather like this, the experience was horrifying. I was going home from work at 630 am in the morning, the road was covered with ICE! Anyone who drove that morning before the snowplow came out know what i am talking about. I have Pirelli snowsport tires on all 4 corners. They are 17 in, 225 on the front and 235 on the rear. For the most part I was going under 40km/h on the DVP in 3 or 4th gear and kept it under 2000rpm. I felt if i went any faster, the car would fishtail. I noticed other FWD/4WD cars are going faster than me. I have read that other people are pretty satified with their G couple with winter tires in the winter. That makes me wonder if it was my snow tires. Do any of you have the same setup as I do? What is your experience. Or was it just he frozen rain? Another thing i noticed was the car always wants to fishtail to the right. I wonder if that has some to do with my tire patterns. BC when i was putting on the winter tire ealier this winter, the mechanic said that my tire patterns are wrong on one side of the car, ie i got the exact same tires for both left and right. He said the tread patterns on the outside of the tires should be pointing down(or was it up? cant remember). So now, since i have the exact same tires on both sides, oneside is pointing up and the other is point down. But i check the pirelli site and the labels in the sidewall of the tire, it doesnt say that they are directional..so i wonder if that matters. The car pull a little to the left with the snowtires on. If that doesnt matter, then the car may be out of alignment. But the wired thing is, when i had my stock summer tires on the car goes straight. Can any one shed some light? Thanks!

The fishtailing to the right is the same in all of our coupes. I truly believe that it is caused by the VLSD. Because it works on the principal of fluid heating up, both wheels do not spin equally at the same time. One wheel will spin before the other until the fluid expands and causes the other wheel to grip. Try this with a twin turbo on dry roads and you will almost always go right (sideways) down the road.

Time to get a true LSD posi differential.

Hey Ian, how did your LSD upgrade help with this problem? Any improvements with the Quaife?

My right tire will always spin easier than the left even with VLSD other than turning to the left.

Yes it was a huge improvement.
It was a blast with VDC off, I'd get the tail out a bit....
then both wheels started to pull & I'd rocket out of a turn

... ummmm BTW, it's for sale.
I'll be listing the parts I have left some time tonight.

Hmmm, well it sounds like you do have a bit of a problem - the snowsports are asymetrical tread pattern. Basically, this means that the inner edge (side you don't see when mounted on a car) of the tire is different from the outer edge (side you see when mounted on a car). This is definitely not good as the tires are designed to channel water away, most effectively when installed properly. In a straight line, I doubt it will make a difference, but during cornering, your tires will not perform optimally.

How new are your tires? If they are in relatively excellent condition, I would go back to the dealer you bought them from. I doubt that he'll take the two incorrect ones back, but he should cut you a deal on a pair of the right ones.

Always gotta double check the work that shops do when they sell or service anything - a lot of those guys are just on cruise control for most of the day and stuff gets by them when they're not paying attention.

A further note, I doubt that your current tire situation is contributing to pull or "fish-tailing" to the right.

Oh, one last thing - NOTHING works on ICE. Drive safe, if you have to drive at all during those conditions.

Let's see if I can put a little pic in to demonstrate an asymetrical tread (if this works, I'll be amazed - ignore the white lines, only way I could fool the system to space out the "tires")

Wrong:
Driver side____________Pass side
__________ ______________________
| \ | | / / / |____________| \ | | / / / |
| \ | | / / / |____________| \ | | / / / |

Correct:
Driver side____________Pass side

I got the snow tires from the previous owner, I think he got them at TireDepot
at Yonge/Centre. I dont think i can go back and ask them for any discount tho, since he got them a last Winter and i dont have the reciept.

Hmm, ok, if the pulling to the left is not caused by the patterns, then is my car out of alignment? If it is, then why I am OK with the Stock Summer tires.Or is it really because of the LSD?
