So far I've never been charged duty & of course no brokerage.
So just GST/PST, which you would pay here anyway.
& for me I'm usually able coordinate business in the area at the same time,
so travel cost is a non-factor.
...I'll be down next week to p/u my aero kit
Track the package. Once it hits Canada, call Fedex and ask them how much you have to pay upon delivery.

The duty will depend on the value of the goods, how it's classified, and the country of origin. If the sender put the full value of $1700USD on the customs declaration form, the taxes and duty will be calculated on that (unless customs thinks it's an unreasonably low declaration).
A brokerage fee of $75 is reasonable for $1700 worth of goods. UPS will often charge a fee of $50 even if the value of the item is $25! CanadaPost mail and parcel will only charge $5 which is why I prefer them for items from the US.
The duty rate can be anywhere from 0 to about 30%. Canada tends to charge higher duties on auto parts, at least those not made in the US. So you might be hit with a big bill. Fedex will hold your shipment for a while till you pay. If you don't pay, it will either be shipped back or auctioned off.

I just did this for my wheels. Value was down as $2000 CAD (thank god), total cost when all I was said and done was $451.68 CAD for brokerage, taxes, and duty. So expect to pay about 20% of the value (or $350). Cheers.
There is a buisness in Buffalo that lets you get any shipment delivered to there post office you rent for it and then pick it up and drive it over. The brokerage charge alone would be more to be able to save you the gas of driving down.
