Sorry, you misunderstood me. I am well aware of the currency exchange amongst many other financial matters.

I meant buying tires makes sense even when our dollar was weaker. Tires are still way cheaper there even after shipping, brokerage, possible duty and previous exchange of 15-20%.

Just received my winters from Tire Rack last week. Final tally:

Quoted C$288 each for 4 Michelin PA3 (V speed): C$1152, C$1221.12 with GST - un-mounted, local shop.

or C$240.43 for PA2 (H speed): C$961.72, C$1019.43 with GST un-mounted, local shop.

Tire Rack U$145 each for PA2 (V speed): U$580
Shipping: U$105.90

VISA was hit C$741.42 (tires and shipping combined)
UPS charged C$146 for GST, duty and brokerage.
C$887.42 all in, so yes, savings of C$333.70 V for V or only C$132 PA2 for PA2 (V vs H).

Downsides? I need to find a shop to mount them. They are too big to fit in the trunk so they need to sit in the back seat. Warranty? Road hazard? In the long run the savings may not be worth the initial - we'll see...

Good info.
As far as transporting them, I had the same problem, I had four 245/45/18 tires and I had to carry two in the trunk and 2 on the back seat. It cost me $20 each for install and balance.

If you want to keep the stock 18's on (like i might do) from the tire gurus in the wheel/tire section i was told you can run an unstaggered setup with 225/50/18's all around or 235/45/18's all around... The prices are each from Tirerack:

225/50/18 -> Blizzak LM25 $179 ea

235/45/18 -> Blizzak LM22 $171 ea

235/45/18 -> Dunlop Wintersport M3 $199 ea

I am however going to take a loook at those ASA 17's if they clear brembos on my 04 6mt coupe as someone posted.

What size tires did you install on these, and you didn't need spacers or anything?

It was a challenge getting them in my coupe too.

I was able to shoehorn two (1 smaller front and a rear tire) into the trunk. By folding the rear seat I was just able to get the others in.

Ian must have to transport his in another vehicle.

In case you missed it, from another thread:

Winter skins arrived at suppertime tonight! So here's the damage:

4 x BS Blizzak 215/55-17 WS60 Tires: $113 ea for a total of $452 US (I'm gonna call it even up on the exchange)
Shipping $95.74
Duty, GST and brokerage $117.91 (less than I expected)
Mount and balance $101

Total: $765.65

Quote from local shop: $1038.08

Savings: about $270
