Taking a bath on an '07 x

On the fence:

I bought a 2007 G35x last January and paid retail (yadda3). Now I find the car doesn't do it for me and want to bail. Downside is the wholesale value after only 1 year is under $30k

Any advice on the best place to sell it?

Holy Chit! I think your best bet is to list it privately and hold out until you get an acceptable offer. Normal people don't pay wholesale.

Things aren't that bad. You are comparing retail upon purchase and wholesale upon release. Worst of both worlds. Use the retail price to peg what you ask for. If your miles are low and it has been well maintained, ask for the upper end. You might consider waiting for a while and getting more use out of it as you probably won't loose much more. GL with whatever you do. Post up some pics here and in the for sale section. I know how you feel. My coupe comes off lease in Sept., and I'm obligated to buy it out. As an old GF used to say, "Sometimes you have to swallow it, and sometimes you don't."
Depends on the spituation I guess.

If you unload your X, what car will you acquire in place of it?

Yesterday as I was walking out of my garage I realized that the last time I drove my Z was nearly a month ago. The whole "garage it in the winter, drive it in the summer" gig is getting tiresome, because it means one less car I can keep warm in the garage during the winter. Thankfully this won't be a problem this spring when I sell my Z and get something I can drive year-round.

Darn, sorry to hear about how you feel. I've had my car for over a year now and really lovin' every mile of it. Just curious though...why the sudden change of heart? Is it the G or did something else catch your eye?

I know how you feel. I've been babying and garaging an '87 Buick GN (still in mint condition) for almost 2 decades. Nevermind driving this car everyday only in the summer --- I now only take it out a few days at that.

It gets really inconvenient to have a something you hardly use take up valuable garage space. This was one of the reasons why I opted to buy a used G instead; I couldn't stand to think a $50K brand new car was gonna be just sitting outside 365 days a year. My family wanted me to get the coupe and I came awful close to getting one --- luckily, cooler heads prevailed when I thought I might end up having 2 garage hogs on my hands.

Joel, if that's the situation consider renting space elsewhere. My G is stored in underground parking at a seniors apartment building a few miles from my home. It's very cheap and I can access it anytime. Some might worry about their car but after doing this for nearly 30 years I haven't had a problem.

Rationale (or lack thereof):

I had a '91 BMW M5 for about 7 years and was always on the fence about selling it. The M was low kms and in excellent condition but was starting to show its age. One day, a fellow practically bit my hand off to buy it and at a price I couldn't refuse. That car was as others have said a likely candidate for 'garage queen' status but was my daily driver. It was getting to an age where I couldn't rely on it for daily transport due to periodic maintenance (downtime) whether for upgrades or repairs. I toyed with the idea of garaging it in the winter and running a beater but I can't stand the idea of driving a $hit car at any time and finances didn't permit running a nice second car, plus the garage is already half occupied with a boat, so storage of the M5 would have meant leaving the other car, whatever it was, outisde.

I bought the G35x thinking it was time for an automatic (first auto car ever owned for more than a few months) - besides the x only came with the auto and I always wanted an AWD car. Seemed like the right choice at the time but I guess I really wasn't ready to stop shifting on my own. This is the major reason.

Likely candidate for replacement: '07 BMW 328xi. Not quite as much power but is still AWD and has a 6MT.

Here's the old M aka 'Road Warrior'. The photo shows one of the reasons for retirement from daily winter service: salt.

I understand. When I first looked at the G myself I wasn't sure how much I was going to like the car too. I'm very, very calculated with my money as I always pay cash for my cars so I just couldn't get myself to lay down $50K on a depreciating asset only to possibly find out I hated the car and have to take a big hit on depreciation --- especially, with a newer G sedan model coming out at the time. That's why I decided to buy used instead and save $10K. Within 2 weeks of ownership though I knew I had a winner on my hands and really did wish I had bought a new '06 model. I guess it's difficult to optimize everything all the time. Because I paid hard-earned cash for my '04 I'm gonna drive it to the ground like all my past vehicles. Unless, I get seduced by that new Dodge Challenger <*LOL*>.

Good luck with the new 3-series though...they do look very sharp and IMO are the nicest looking 3-series to come out yet.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the car, it just isn't for me.

Frankly the technology, fit/finish and design details are really amazing. The thing is freakishly fast - so much so that it will get into VDC throttle-back between first/second on acceleration in a straight line

If I had to nit-pick, some of the system software could be more intuitive but that's it.
