I took my car for 24000km service today to Oakville, agreed to get it through all the services they suggested for 24000km, drew their attention that the car runs on synthetic, paid total $450.00, in my invoice it said that they use regular oil, the service advisor said that he did it on purpose to save me some bucks How can I make sure that he didn't lie? I really need your input, thanks

 

Pull the dipstick out and lick it. If it tastes salty, they used synthetic.

As far as I know there's no way to know unless you do a chemical analysis at a lab.

of course I meant mineral oil above...(simply working on a website about organic food at this moment ) I would not worry if I knew it is OK to go back from synthetic to mineral but I've heard that it is bad for the engine...???

 

^ there's nothing wrong switching back and forth. They are compatible.

 

If RBull says it's okay, then it's okay. I'd be kinda pissed though if I specified synth and they put in dino; while it's nice that the SA wanted to save you some $$, I prefer to make my own decisions about stuff like that, thanks. That's why I (and a lot of members) change my own -- I know what goes into it and that it's done right. I presume it was part of the service in this case.

I'm with you on the making your own decision. They made a mistake and tried covering it up with the "saving you money" thing. Really they should change it to synthetic for no extra charge or alternatively find some other acceptable way of compensating.

I change my own as well.

 

Same thing happened with me. Had to take the car in for service 2; and i brought my own 0W30 oil; 5 bottles of it. When I got the car back I realised that the empty bottles weren't in the car. I asked my service advisor and he said they most likely used it all (I thought our cars only take 4.8L of oil...). I didn't feel like complaining over empty bottles since they were changing my pump next week and I didn't want to get effed on that as well; haha. But I do have a strange feeling they took my oil and put in some cheap oil in the car. The car does warm up in 2 minutes though; and -49C and no block heater and it still turns over with no problem!

 

I guess if you want to make sure. Asked if you can watch as they changed the oil.
Then there is no way for them to switch the oil.
